Ali J Photography I have always loved taking photos; they can capture moments or tell stories so powerfully.
(1)

Nottingham based photographer - but I love to travel and capture special moments.

- Family photo shoots
- Business and corporate events
- Headshots
- Gymnastics and dance events
- Music gigs and festivals
- Weddings and birthdays In recent years, I have been lucky enough that my passion has developed from a hobby into the inklings of a career. A teacher by trade, I am now starting to share my

time between both careers. From taking relaxed family shots out at a favourite haunt or capturing the spirit of dance events to wandering around festivals and music venues or providing promotional shots of products, I am happy behind the lens, creating those shots that give wonderful memories. My favourite way of working is to be in the background, letting events unfold around me, noticing the small details, glimpses into characters and settings, which make taking shots of those magical images easy.

Nearly every wedding photographer’s website and socials currently promises some variation of: “natural storytelling imagery capturing authentic moments while remaining unobtrusively in the background.”

Which is lovely.
And also slightly impossible.

Because at some point somebody has to:
• organise family photos
• find missing grandparents
• fix buttonholes
• move empty glasses from the tables to be out of shot
• reassure nervous humans
• distract overtired toddlers
• and gently stop Uncle Dave wandering into the ceremony holding a pint.

The truth is good wedding photography is not about “hiding in the background” all day.

It’s about knowing when presence helps and when absence matters.
It’s being calm enough that the day keeps flowing naturally around you, the couple.

And experienced enough to notice the important things before they turn into stresses. That’s the bit that makes the difference. And experienced photographers have this down pat; they take cracking shots AND have been around enough weddings and people to notice and gently direct as well, ensuring you are the centre of attention and they are in the background.

Chat to a few of us photographers and find someone who matches your energy, as well as someone whose style you like; we’ll be around you for a long time on one of your most special days, mixing alongside family and friends; getting it right is not just for the photos.

Harry Baker is always a light in my calendar that has shined for many, many years, since one of his first appearances at GB and Dinosaur Love became a favourite of the boys, alongside Monopoly and many others. Mainly at GB, but occasionally closer to home and Thursday was no exception. Brilliant and a touch of Greenbelt Festival magic during the year is always a fab!

Thanks for this Harry, made my day!

(Maybe an ) Unpopular opinion:

The hardest part of wedding photography isn’t actually the photography.

It’s:
• reading the room
• calming nervous people
• noticing when someone needs five quiet minutes
• keeping family photos moving without becoming a PE teacher
• handling stress without spreading stress
• knowing when to step in
• and when to disappear into the background.

Cameras are learnable. People skills are the real thing and have to come along side.

Most wedding photographers now are selling themselves on natural photos, capturing real moments. Working out who will work best with you, your family and friends is the decision. We spend a lot of time on one of your biggest days with you.

Choose someone whose style you love AND someone who will fit in with your family and friends. I like being 'in the background' but there are times us photographers need to stand up and organise, to be there but keeping you the centre of attention.

The best wedding photos usually happen when people feel comfortable enough to stop performing. The camera’s just the tool.

Contact a few photographers, have a chat before committing to booking them to spend one of your biggest days with your family and friends.

Good Wedding Photography Is Often About Noticing Things Early

Most couples plan their weddings incredibly well.

Timelines are organised.
Suppliers are booked.
Details are thought through carefully.
People have spreadsheets.

And still — because weddings involve humans — tiny bits of chaos always appear anyway.

Not disastrous chaos.

Just normal wedding-day reality.
- Flowers end up abandoned in odd corners.
- Buttonholes slowly rotate upside down.
- A room suddenly gets crowded and noisy.
- Someone important disappears exactly when they’re needed.
- A toddler decides they are emotionally finished for the day.
- None of this means the wedding is going badly.

It’s just what happens when lots of people, emotions, logistics and excitement all collide in one place.

I think one of the less visible parts of wedding photography is learning how to notice these things before they become stressful.

Not in a dramatic “taking charge” sort of way. More quietly.
Moving a bag before it ends up in every photograph.
Suggesting five minutes of breathing space when someone looks overwhelmed.
Fixing something small before the couple even realise it needed fixing.
Keeping things moving calmly so energy never tips into panic.

Because weddings tend to follow the emotional tone of the people around you.

If suppliers are frantic and chaotic, the day starts to feel frantic and chaotic too.

If people are calm, organised and paying attention, couples usually relax into the day much more naturally.

And relaxed people are far easier to photograph.

Not because they’re performing well. But because they’re present.

That’s usually when the best moments happen:
• people actually forgetting about the camera
• proper laughter
• emotional reactions
• guests settling into the atmosphere
• couples actually enjoying themselves instead of trying to “do wedding photography correctly.”

The funny thing is most of these moments happen because the day is flowing well in the background.

Not because somebody spent 40 minutes creating a perfect pose.

So while photography obviously matters, I think the atmosphere around the photography matters just as much.

A calm day nearly always creates better photographs than a perfectly controlled one.

I was out with a family on their farm a few weeks ago. Four kids, grandparents, aunts and uncles, a cat and a very good Easter egg hunt mixed in with rhubarb picking and log piling.

One of my favourite shoots in a long time — not because everything went perfectly, but because nothing was performed. They just got on with being themselves and I followed them around with a camera.

I've worked with this family and documented the kids growing up since I found them playing on the lawn at Greenbelt Festival where I lead the photo team, when there was only 2 of them and have become friends over the intervening years and 2 kids has grown to 4!

If you've been putting off a family shoot because the kids are too wriggly, or you haven't lost the weight yet, or you're waiting for the right moment — this is me gently suggesting you don't wait.

These guys are about capturing what happens and a grumpy kid isn't a problem to fix. A grumpy kid is a real kid and as a primary teacher, I know how to hold the space, distract and just let things happen. (And when they're looking back at those pictures in twenty years, that little scowl is going to make them laugh and cringe in equal measure.)

The right moment is already happening. You're just maybe not photographing it yet.

I've written a bit more about how I work and why I love to photograph families in motion, not standing still — there's a link to read it below in the comments, plus a guide to download with details and prices if you want to think about booking your own shoot.
