Wray Castle was constructed in 1840 for James Dawson, a retired surgeon from Liverpool, using his wife’s fortune. Alongside the house, he also built the neighboring Wray Church. After Dawson’s death in 1875, his fifteen-year-old nephew, Edward Preston Rawnsley, inherited the estate. In 1877, Edward’s cousin, Hardwicke Rawnsley, became the vicar of Wray Church. To protect the countryside from harmful development, Hardwicke Rawnsley, inspired by John Ruskin, envisioned a National Trust that could purchase and preserve areas of natural beauty and historic significance for the nation.

Perched on a rock outcrop at the intersection of the Honister and Newlands passes, a charming church of St James overlooks the village of Buttermere.

The original structure dates back to 1507, while the current building was constructed in 1840 and restored in 1930. Notable features include a memorial to guidebook author Alfred Wainwright, a wrought iron shepherd’s gate, and twin angels on the reredos, carved by Cumbrian farmer Jonathon Stamper in 1998.

Even if you have been to Stonehenge you might still not know that in the 70’ someone paint sprayed word LOVE across stones, it was cleaned off but for some reason one type of lichen took liking of the paint residue and keeps growing where paint used to be, making LOVE visible . Zoom on the first photo and you can clearly see letters V and E.
Fun facts:
The growth on Stonehenge is truly fascinating! 🌿 Over 70 species of lichen have been discovered on the stones, including several rare types. Interestingly, some of these are typically found only on exposed coastlines. Nature’s wonders never cease to amaze! 🪨✨

P.S What’s your thoughts on the recent attack on Stonehenge?

Combe Martin, a village in North Devon, England, has a rich and varied history. Its name is derived from "combe," meaning a valley, and "Martin," referring to the Norman family who held the manor after the Norman Conquest.

The village's history dates back to the Bronze Age, with evidence of early settlements found in the surrounding areas. During the medieval period, Combe Martin thrived due to its silver mines, which were among the most productive in England during the 13th and 14th centuries. The village was granted a charter to hold markets, contributing to its economic growth.

In more recent history, Combe Martin has evolved into a charming seaside village, attracting tourists with its natural beauty, rocky beaches, and intriguing caves.
