So yeah, can you make a film about a doormat and still make it engaging?

Also…How do you rally underpaid, overstressed teachers to take a stand?

Teachers' union NASUWT asked us to come up with something sharp, quick, and bang on message.

Their ballots had to be posted, not emailed (cheers, legal system), so we leaned into that.

💥 Idea... Everything that hits a teacher’s doormat - bills, closures, dire headlines - was building the case for change.
💥 Ex*****on... A whole story told by a single doormat.
💥 Prop team... Crafted fictional bills, newsletters and newspapers to paint the picture.
💥 Model... One hard-working hand, picking up a ballot that could change everything.

Tagline..

Don’t be a doormat.

Obvs.

It’s punchy. It’s simple. It’s proper real.

Sent out to over a million people as part of a nationwide online campaign - and the feedback’s been well lush.

This is how to use nostalgia in marketing! Great sound design, and the music adds to it no end. A beautifully made video!

💡 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠? 🎯

Influencing behaviour is the name, and incentives are the game. Word of warning... They can easily backfire if not carefully designed. This is why, and how to avoid this...

🚨 𝐁𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬... Take the story of fossil recovery in 19th century China. Local peasants were paid per fossil fragment found. Logically, instead of working harder, they smashed fossils into pieces to maximise their earnings. So yeah, more fragments, but less scientific value. ⚒️

🏚️ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡... In the 17th century, England’s window tax led to people bricking up their windows to avoid paying. The Netherlands faced similar issues, with houses becoming narrower due to taxes based on width. Both examples show how poorly thought-out incentives can shape architecture and behaviour in unexpected ways!! 🏘️

🚌 𝐀𝐁 𝐓𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞... Incentives should be tested before full-scale roll out. A study with Chilean bus drivers found that those paid per passenger drove faster but were involved in more accidents. Testing revealed the trade-offs between efficiency and safety. It’s all about balance. 🚍

✈️ 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞... Frequent flyer miles are a brilliant incentive. They reward the traveller (not the ticket buyer), creating loyalty without directly costing the airline. Airlines capitalise on who enjoys the benefit versus who pays, driving business from frequent travellers. 🛫

💥 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫... Blockbuster’s late fees were highly profitable but alienated customers, leading to Netflix’s rise (and let’s be real, we do love the pure convenience of the platform). Incentives that punish rather than reward can drive customers straight to your competitors. 🎬

𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 💡

Incentives are tricky - make them too small, and they probably won’t pay off at all. Testing is soooooo important... you must make sure you understand the psychology behind the incentives, and you always need to consider the potential unintended consequences. Remember... You don’t want anything to backfire!

Not every edit needs a headline

One of our best-performing clips opened without any copy at all.

Just a look. A pause. A sense that something was about to happen.

Text adds clarity - but silence builds tension.

When everyone else is starting with a bang, sometimes a whisper gets heard more clearly.

🎬⚡𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐘𝐚 𝐃𝐈𝐘 𝐕𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧... 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐩𝐬

We’ve been capturing some sickk actor performances for a tourism-focused campaign, so fun!!
Anyway, let’s talk video (something we know A LOT ABOUT)... Once you’ve mastered the basics of video production, it's time to level up the game with these pro tips. Your videos can make a huge impact on your business, so here’s how to really refine your approach...

📝 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐄𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥... Protect your business by having contributors sign release forms before filming. This prevents potential legal issues if someone decides to withdraw. A small gesture like offering a token fee can solidify the agreement.

🔒 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐩𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭... Never use someone else’s music, images, or video clips without permission. Always ensure you purchase the correct rights for your intended use. Adding a copyright notice to your video is a good practice to protect your work.

🎤 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐞...
- 𝐿𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛 𝑊𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑌𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝐸𝑦𝑒𝑠... Avoid verbal acknowledgments during filming-nod instead.
- 𝐸𝑛𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝐹𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑅𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑠... Guide interviewees to repeat the question in their answer for clearer clips.
- 𝑀𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑜𝑟 𝑆𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑜𝑢𝑠𝑙𝑦... Use headphones to catch any audio issues in real time.

🎬 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭...
- 𝑆ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑇𝑤𝑜 𝑆𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑠... Capture both wide and close-up shots to offer flexibility in editing.
- 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝐾𝑒𝑦 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔... Position your key light on the same side as the interviewer to create natural shadows and bring depth to your subject’s face.

💾 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲... Always back up your footage in multiple locations to avoid disasters. Remember, if your data is only in one place, it's at risk. Not a risk you wanna take that’s for SURE!!

🎧 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤... Capture ambient noise separately to smooth out audio transitions during editing.

Follow and use these advanced tips, and the quality of your DIY videos will be insaneeee... it’ll ensure they’re professional, polished, and impactful. YIPPEE!! Happy filming! 🎥📈

🔍 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠?

So so true, as marketers, we often feel swamped by the sheer number of behavioural nudges kicking around. How do we decide which one to use? 💡

Let’s say you want customers to download your app. There are countless tactics - from social proof to scarcity. Which one should you pick?!

🎯 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠! 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥

This model simplifies behaviour change into three barriers you gotta overcome...

1️⃣ 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠... People prefer the path of least resistance. If the effort required to act is greater than the perceived reward, they won’t bother. For example, making bank switching easier by reducing the steps involved can overcome this barrier.

2️⃣ 𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑚... Too many choices can paralyse. If your customers are overwhelmed by options, they’ll freeze. Simplify their decision-making by limiting choices or clearly differentiating them. 🛒

3️⃣ 𝐹𝑒𝑎𝑟... Loss aversion is powerful. People are more motivated to avoid a loss than to seek a gain. Highlighting what they might lose if they don’t act can push them towards the desired behaviour. 🚨

🔑 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐘𝐚... To encourage behaviour change, focus on making the desired action easy, reducing overwhelm, and addressing fears. Here’s a great example... Supermarket trolleys that require a pound coin. The fear of losing that pound ensures almost everyone returns the trolley!

Use this model to guide your marketing efforts and watch your customer engagement go wiiiiiild!

🎯 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞… 𝐀𝐒𝐀𝐏 🎯

We’ve been drafting a visual outline for a charity fundraising drive, it's lookin’ goood!! Crafting a compelling narrative isn’t just 'bout stringing events together tho- it’s about connecting the dots in a way that chimes nicely with your audience…

Here’s some tips on how we do just that...

🔍 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 - Think of your brand as a treasure trove. Dig deep, even if you hit a few dud bits along the way. Sift through everything-some details will be gold, others might be clutter. It will be soooo worth it!!

📝 𝐌𝐚𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬 - Start with bullet points... Key moments, backstory, and crucial thoughts that lead to your story's climax. But yeah, don’t just narrate events-alternate between action and reflection. Switch it up!

🎬 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 - Scenes are the heartbeat of your story. Use them to show-not tell-critical moments. If you skip a key scene, your audience might get lost. Make sure we can see, FEEL, and understand the journey.

✂️ 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐥𝐲 - Not every detail is essential. Think of it like film editing... You wouldn’t show every moment of a journey, just the highlights. Jump-cuts are your friend. Chop chop!

🔍 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 - Details turn a good story into a vivid, immersive experience. Use them to highlight emotions, create tension, and support the stakes in your narrative.

🔄 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Provide enough context for your audience to understand the stakes, but avoid overwhelming them with too much information upfront.

🏁 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐜 - Your story should show a transformation. What was your brand at the start, and where is it now? Ensure your conclusion reflects this change.

Your audience is riding shotgun on your narrative journey. Keep them engaged with strong scenes, meaningful details, and a clear arc. Make double sure your story isn’t just a sequence of events-it’s a POWERFUL tool for connection. 🚀

🚀 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 🚀

In a world flooded with ads, standing out is essential. Having said this, too many brands are missing the mark big time, falling into the trap of mimicking their competitors.

You should break free from the herd and embrace distinctiveness in your marketing, this is the how-to...

1️⃣ 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐖𝐢𝐧... The Von Restorff effect shows that unique elements are 30x more likely to be remembered. If your ads blend in, they’ll be forgotten. Think of EasyJet’s bold orange branding-it stood out in a sea of bland airline ads and helped them dominate the low-cost market. ✈️🍊

2️⃣ 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐩... Many brands copy what their competitors are doing, assuming it’s the safe bet. But sameness is the real risk. For example, after Compare the Market’s success with the meerkat ads, competitors jumped on the bandwagon with their own characters, missing the point that distinctiveness, not the character itself, was the key to success.

3️⃣ 𝐁𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐝, 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝... Research shows that rhyming phrases are perceived as more accurate and are easier to remember. Yet, the use of rhymes in ads has halved in recent years. Don’t shy away from what works just because it’s out of fashion - embrace what will make your message stick. 🎶

4️⃣ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬... If you find yourself thinking “we should do this because everyone else is,” stop and reconsider. True success often lies in taking a different path. Look at your industry and ask, “What’s everyone missing?”

👉 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲
Don’t be afraid to stand out. It’s not just about being creative - it’s about being noticed. In a crowded market, 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 isn’t just an option... 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲.
