In the midst of planning a pitch to create a sliiiiick brand film for an international food start-up…food👏 is 👏life.👏 Anyway, here are a few bits and bobs we’ve learnt from re-reading Will Storr’s Science of Storytelling for about the millionth time (it never gets old)...
Culture shapes us in PROFOUND ways, influencing how we think, act, and even perceive the world. It's more than just a bunch o’ art, fashion, or food - culture is embedded deeply in our neural wiring, shaping our view of reality from a young age.

Our cultural environment dictates our values, beliefs, and even our tastes. From a young age, our brains are moulded by the norms and expectations of our society, whether it's the foods we eat or the moral rules we uphold. For instance, what seems delicious in one culture might be repulsive in another. Culture defines what we find acceptable, desirable, and even heroic.

Western cultures, with their roots in Ancient Greece, tend to value individualism and personal freedom. Stories from these cultures often highlight the struggle of a singular hero who battles adversity and emerges victorious. Think of Greek myths with their clear beginning, middle, and end-crisis, struggle, resolution. (Or you could think of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, both work!).
In contrast, Eastern cultures, typically shaped by communal values, often tell stories which focus on harmony and interconnectedness. The Japanese narrative form Kisho-tenketsu, for example, introduces characters, follows their actions, presents an unexpected twist, and ends with an invitation to find harmony - not closure.

Understanding these cultural nuances and more can be PROPER game-changers in your storytelling and marketing approach. Western audiences might respond better to narratives of individual triumph, while Eastern audiences might appreciate stories which explore balance and interconnectedness. And that’s just the start!
So for sure, in a world where brands are more global than ever, tailoring your stories to land with a THUD with cultural values isn't just smart - properly it's essential. Take from that what you will!🌟
