An evening with some amazing women

Last month I was invited to attend a special evening of celebration back in one of those rugby grounds that I spent so much time at back in my Fleet Street photography days. It was an evening to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Great Britain Women’s rugby matches, the first rugby international matches played by Great Britain Women.

You see, I was one of those photographers who covered these very first women’s rugby Internationals. I think it is wonderful that from those early games the powerful England Women’s squad has emerged. Without the ground breaking that these women did forty years ago; we would not have the world champion squad of players that we have today.

Rugby is a wonderful sport. It is so much more than just a game. It makes us happy, and it provides us with lifelong friends. When play on the pitch stops, those friendships endure and remain with us for ever. Photographs are one way of reminding us of our teammates and the friends that we made over the years.

I took a rest from social media yesterday as it was my 65th birthday. In years gone past this might have marked the time for my retirement, and my sudden taking up of bowls, golf or fishing. However, none of this happened, I am not retired, have no desire to play old people's marbles, have no golf bats and don't bother fish. Back to my standard routine

I have been staggered by the number of good wishes, congratulations and general good feeling that has been directed my way. Really unexpected and very well received – thank you all.

I had a great day with my close family, wife Julie and youngest son Lewis. Lewis took us out to the The Soulville Steakhouse in Nottingham. My steak was superb company great of course. In the afternoon we returned to Chateau Dachey-Jenkins and watched the latest Predator film Predator: Badlands. The rest of the day involved the eating of crisps, drinking of beer, and rum, and a quantity of mead (Thank you Sarah), and the day was enjoyable and mellow. To come is a visit to the Welbeck Brewery to visit their Rum distillery section.

So, thank you again everyone and I will now return to my normal routine. Photography of events and conferences (Pete Jenkins Photography) will resume, editing of rugby photos from my Fleet Street days (From the Back of a Motorbike), working on the sixth of my Rugby Club Players Books (Leicester Tigers), digitising and repair of old photographs (Detail Photography) and other rugby, aero and photographic projects as they present themselves.

My life is truly blessed – thank you

40 years and counting, Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists for Nottingham freelance photographer Pete Jenkins

I enjoy my work, always have done, whether it was photographing local activities and sports for West London newspapers, Rugby matches for Fleet Street or Conferences for NGOs and industry.
Last week I was the proud recipient of Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists, presented to me by Nottingham NUJ branch chairperson Benedict Cooper.

I am not an outgoing chap by nature and find it difficult to stand up in public or praise my own achievements. So it was a bit daunting when I was asked to attend the NUJ Nottingham branch meeting last week and make a short speech and receive a certificate marking my Life Membership of the National Union of Journalists.

It seems like yesterday when I chatted to Barry Fairall (then of the Guardian) and other journos at a rugby match about union membership, and it was Barry who kindly proposed me to the London Freelance branch of the union.

Within only a few months I was caught up in the Wapping dispute...

Here I am more than 40 years later. What happened to all those years?

Rugby -Yes.
Conferences – Yes.
Events – Yes.

I also undertake regular commissions from my long-standing Fleet Street clients as well.
