Things I’ve had said to me while working as a wedding photographer.

Most of the people who ask these questions probably don’t mean any harm. Some are curious. Some are trying to make conversation. But when you’re on the receiving end of comments like these, over and over again, they start to feel less like curiosity and more like a reminder that you’re being seen as “other”.

A question I often get asked, is why I don’t challenge it in the moment.

The truth is that, most of the time, I don’t feel able to.

When I’m working at a wedding, I’m there to do a job. It’s someone else’s special day. The last thing I want is to create discomfort or conflict. If I stop and ask, “Why do you ask?” or explain why a question is inappropriate, the mood can change instantly. Too often, the person being questioned becomes the problem, rather than the person asking the question.

Suddenly, I’m no longer the photographer doing my job. I’m the one making things awkward.

So I smile, I stay professional, and I move on.

But that doesn’t mean the comments don’t stay with me.

I don’t share this because I’m angry. I share it because many people don’t realise how often these conversations happen, or how exhausting it can be to navigate them while trying to remain professional.

Sometimes the most important conversations are the ones we never felt comfortable having in the moment.

ps. I am very proudly half Sri Lankan, half Scottish, and feel that having my Sri Lankan Queen soundtrack this, is everything 🫶🏽

A long time ago
In a galaxy far far away
There was a girl who met a boy
Who didn’t realise they loved each other straight away

But as they spent more time
Drinking cider and fine wine
On the sofas of their favourite spot

Not to toot my own horn but…
Actually you know what? I’m gonna toot it 😈

I can hand on heart say at least 3 or 4 of these get said to me every wedding. Why? Because I get involved. I care. I spend time with your guests as well as the couple (they bring some main character energy too, right?!).

When you’re choosing someone to be there all day with you, pick someone who can do your photos, and be a vibe ✌🏽

What exactly is a second shooter?
Well, first and foremost, it’s a choice, not a necessity. Something I will never pressure you into, when I’m pitching my services to you, is additional services if you don’t need them.

A second shooter is a colleague of mine, who is chosen by me, to shoot in a similar style to me, to make sure additional moments of your day are captured. All their photos come to me at the end of the day, and are edited in my own editing style.

A second shooter might be for you if:
1) you want different angles covering (such as both of your faces during the aisle walk)
2) you are getting ready in different locations and want both of you captured during pre-wedding celebrations
3) you have a large guests list (100+) and have lots of activities planned during the day which will be tricky for one person to cover alone
4) if you want guest interactions captured for when you’re not present, for example during couples portraits!
5) perhaps you just want every angle and moment captured, because you’ve spent a lifetime planning your day and you want it to be perfect!

A second shooter probably isn’t for you, if:
1) neither of you are particularly keen on having your photo taken, and feel anxious when even one camera is point long at you. Adding another one in is likely to exacerbate this.
2) you’re having a small, intimate ceremony, a small celebration or even just want a couple of hours of coverage. No fuss.
3) you aren’t fussed so much about every moment, but more keen on the atmosphere being captured by someone you’ve spent time getting to know.
4) you don’t have the budget for the additional cost. Second shooters are an additional £300 on top of your wedding package, so it might not be something that feels within reach.
5) you just don’t feel you want one. That’s ok.

Here are some examples of how different angles are looked at through the eyes of no.1 & no.2. Thank you to Chris Thornton Wedding Photography & Video who came along with me on this one, and helped to make their gallery one they will love for a lifetime!

What’s the wildest thing that’s ever happened to you at a wedding? 👀

All of these experiences are true. Some are a little sadder than others. But we don’t grow without a bit of heavy rain sometimes do we? 🌹
