They say don't meet your heroes?
Last week I met one of mine.
Did this person fall short of my admiration for his determination, knowledge, and drive?
No... he exceeded it.
Have I watched this person on the tv for about 40 years?
Yes.
Did he prove to be different in person to the person he is on tv?
No
Do I agree with everything this person says, does and believes in?
No
Did this person quote Billy Bragg as saying "if you're not getting flak you're not over the target"
Yes.
Does this person receive a lot of flak?
Yes
Is this person still true to his beliefs?
Yes.
Does this person think he and his opinions and beliefs are always right?
No, he spoke to young people to tell them that ego can be a problem, that we're not always right in our opinions and choices and we should recognise that, and not let ego get in the way of working together for a better future.
Did this person inspire me to be a better person and make more of an effort to fight for my beliefs?
Yes.
Did this person help my family, and many many more people by making tv programmes that looked at Autism in great detail?
Yes, massively, the programmes he helped make made me see the world in a different light, and understand people in my everyday and in my past better.
Did this person despite being more tired than usual on the day I met him, give his 100% to making a difference to people, nature and wildlife, by giving away time when he was meant to be having breaks to give interviews to students, speaking tirelessly to press, inspiring young conservationists, chatting with business leaders- and then entertaining a 500 strong audience for several hours.
Yes.
Did Norfolk Wildlife Trust in the year of their 100th Anniversary with University of East Anglia do a great job of getting Chris Packham to inspire lots of people?
Yes.
Did I see any young people who could take on the great mantle and legacy of Great British conservationists meet Chris on the day?
Yes, quite a few.
Does this give me hope for our future?
Yes.
Am I lucky to be a photographer in that affords me behind the scenes access to many different places and people?
Yes.
Do I regret not thanking Chris personally for the Autism documentary and his contribution to conservation?
Yes, but I had a job to do, and I witnessed lots of other people doing just that throughout the day, and other excuses...
Did I tell my wife that Chris' favourite wildlife hide in East Anglia is the one she managed the build of at RSPB Titchwell?
Yes :-)
With thanks to the great team Norfolk Wildlife Trust who are always an inspiration, and whose hard work and dedication to wildlife and people makes a difference.
