Seaside Welcome
A curious grey seal pup gazes intently into the camera, its soft white fur framed by a cushion of blurred pebbles. Gentle waves roll in the background, as it holds one fore-flipper to its chest and the other outstretched as if welcoming the viewer into its environment.

Grey on White
Against the monochrome background of snow, a grey seal pup with white fur lies nestled on the beach. I converted the image to black and white to increase the simplicity of the scene and to draw the viewer into the main focal point of the seals jet black eye and darker features of its nose and whiskers; creating a minimalist image that captures the quiet magic of snow on the Norfolk coast.

British Wildlife Photography Awards 2026
I just found out yesterday that two of my images will be included in Collection 14 of the British Wildlife Photography Awards to be published in the Spring 2026. I'm very excited to be included in the book again this year and to find out if either image will be highly commended. Although I do wildlife photography because I really love it, its great to get recognition especially from the judges of such a prestigious photographic competition.

Grey Seal Pup nestled in the Dunes
Grey Seal Pup nestled comfortably on a bed of Marram Grass, takes a break from the exhausting struggle for survival in the shelter of the dunes. I converted to black and white to enhance the sense of texture, allowing the viewer to focus more closely on the intricate details and contrasts within the scene. The interplay of light and shadow becomes more pronounced, highlighting the softness of the pup's coat and the sharpness of the grass, which might otherwise be overshadowed by the natural hues.

Bull Seals Fighting

Two grey seal bulls clash powerfully in the surf as one lunges towards the other, bearing a mouthful of sharp teeth. Both have drawn a considerable amount of blood staining their pelts bright crimson, evidence of the ferocity of their battle for dominance. Behind them, the imposing line of granite boulders forming the sea defences stands resolute, lending a dramatic and rugged backdrop to this raw display of strength and survival.

Unrequited Lust!
A Red Deer Stag bellows mournfully amongst the bleached grass and autumn colours of the bracken and trees. The echo of his call lingers in the air, a poignant signal of loss as his harem drift away towards another stag bellowing in the distance. The rich russet tones in his coat compliment the autumnal background, lending a regal air to his solitary vigil.

Great White Egret - Motion Blur
When I photograph wildlife I always aim to set a fast enough shutter speed to freeze movement but when available light is in short supply it’s extremely challenging to capture a quality image especially if the subject is moving. In order to get sufficient shutter speeds in such conditions the aperture must be wide open and ISO high which inevitably causes high amounts of digital noise. Instead, I decided to capture this Great White Egret flying, by setting a slow shutter speed that captured the motion blur of its wings as it flew low across the water. This technique is quite hit and miss and requires a lot of experimentation matching the length of time the aperture is open to the speed of the subject to create a pleasing impression of movement and action.
