Dunstanburgh Castle at dusk đź’ś the epic location of this castle situated on a prominent headland, part of the Great Whin Sill is really apparent when seen in an aerial shot.

Dunstanburgh Castle was built in the centre of a designed medieval landscape, surrounded by three artificial lakes and was the largest castle in Northumberland. The name itself may stem from a combination of the name of the local village of Dunstan, and the Old English word “burh”, meaning fortress.

Always one of my favourite locations the scenery and tranquility here is unmatched đź’ś

Sunset silhouette of Longstone lighthouse, Farne Islands 🧡

The lighthouse was built in 1826, the lighthouse’s most famous event occurred in 1838 when Grace Darling and her father who lived in the lighthouse rowed to the scene of the Forfarshire wreck in a small boat to rescue nine survivors.

Taken on a sunset cruise to the Farne Islands last summer this view never gets old I always enjoy my trips here and loved getting to climb inside last year and see the view from the top.

Bamburgh Castle at sunrise 🌅

Long before the stone walls, this was Bebbanburg — the early 7th-century stronghold named after Queen Bebba. It became the power base of Bernicia, home to influential Anglo-Saxon rulers like Æthelfrith and Oswald, and a key site for controlling the northern coast.

The Normans later replaced the old timber fort with the stone castle we recognise today, much of it built in the 1100s. It was famously one of the first English castles brought down by artillery in 1464 and was restored centuries later by William Armstrong, whose family still owns it.

Northumberland’s most famous summer visitors 🌿

Every year, thousands of puffins return to the Farne Islands to breed, filling the cliffs and grassy slopes with one of the UK’s most loved seabirds.

From carrying multiple fish in a single beakful to raising tiny pufflings in underground burrows, there’s far more to these birds than their colourful appearance.

Swipe through for a few facts you might not know about Northumberland’s puffins. . .

Sunset illuminated Church Hill, Alnmouth 🧡

Church Hill at Alnmouth was separated from the main village by a violent storm on Christmas Day in 1806 which changed the course of the river cutting off the hill and its church which is now marked by a wooden cross on top of the hill.

The cross is said to be the location where St Cuthbert agreed to become Bishop of Lindisfarne when petitioned by the king. Now a Northumberland landmark and a popular walk to the hill doesn’t get much more stunning then when alight with the glow of sunset!

Golden hour at Druridge Bay with Northumberland’s unexpected Highland residents 🧡

While most visitors come for the beach, some of the area’s most recognisable residents are found tucked away among the dunes.

These Highland cattle aren’t just a striking feature of the landscape. Their grazing helps maintain the coastal grassland habitat, encouraging a greater variety of plants and wildlife to thrive.

Captured here in the last light of the day, with the dunes glowing gold and the North Sea beyond its been on my list for a while to grab some golden hour shots of these local beauties and finally hit on the right light 👌🏻

Summer Solstice in Northumberland 🧡

Today is the longest day of the year, with the sun above the horizon for more than 17 hours and one of the best regions to spend it in.

A reminder to make the most of the light, spend a little longer outdoors and enjoy everything Northumberland has to offer while the days are at their longest. How are you spending the longest day of the year?
