Laura Lake Photography Capturing the wildlife of Norfolk. During Lockdown, I began taking pictures of local wildlife, hoping to inspire others.

I've since featured on BBC Look East, by BBC Earth, Countryfile & Norfolk Magazine. My seal picture is also shortlisted for a BP Award

‘Sealaxing’

One extremely chilled moulting weaned seal pup relaxing in the glorious morning sun. It had earlier been coaxed off the main path by a fellow warden and set up camp right in the beach entrance! Good job the beach is closed and the area is all roped off!

It was lovely to actually go and visit the seals off duty today with my children…and camera of course!

This was taken on the viewing platform, behind the ropes with 600mm lens and cropped.

What’s that coming over the hill is it a…weaned seal pup? 😁🦭

Who took me by surprise when looking out at the colony, this one shuffled up from out of nowhere!

(Taken last year on the viewing platform at a safe distance, behind the ropes using a 600mm lens)

‘Squab’

We were so privileged to have Wood Pigeons nesting in the large tree in our garden during the Summer! They successfully raised three little ones and it was incredible to observe their progress! Yes they may not be the most attractive baby birds…but they are still very sweet and we loved getting to know them.

It's actually quite rare to see baby pigeons because nests tend to be very high up and well covered, plus they spend a lot longer in the nest than other birds do (on average 30 days). When they fledge, they look almost similar to the plumage of adult birds so it’s harder to distinguish. They chose quite a low tree and it was easily seen from the ground…both parents and babies weren’t bothered by our presence in the garden at all.

This little one is less than 2 weeks old here, look at the feathers growing in at the top of its head! We couldn’t believe how quickly they grow in size, the first 10 days they are fed exclusively on crop milk from mum and dad, then gradually seeds and other foods are introduced by the parents.

I’ve read recently that pigeons do often reuse their nests, they build around and on top of pre-existing ones, and as you probably know pigeons are monogamous, so we hope after their successful brood they’ll return again next year!

Ok so I’m slightly gutted I didn’t get the full stretched out wing in this shot, BUT the reason was…I physically couldn’t fit it all in the frame, the owl was that close!!

This barn owl literally decided to fly so close while it was hunting, it was right in front of me as I was hiding behind a tree, it happened so quickly that I only had a split second to react and couldn’t physically zoom out or step back any further!!

I do love the fact this stunning bird is looking in my direction here, I could watch them hunt all day long!

‘Caught you’

Watching this Little Egret fish was one of the most awesome wildlife encounters I’ve had.

I was sat very still and quiet and it just flew in, landing right near me and wasn’t bothered by my presence at all, I’m sure it must’ve known I was there, but I ended up sitting observing it for over two hours, preening and fishing!

I could see a wonderful black background opportunity where it was fishing…it took him a while but eventually, waiting patiently and holding my heavy lens in position for what seemed like forever…it paid off! Although my arms are still aching!!

I’ve barely edited this image, just cropped and adjusted a few things. This was the very image I envisaged when I watched him fish.

I feel very privileged to have been able to spend time with one of these famously shy birds.

Buzzard in the snow ❄️

So as usual, Norfolk missed the proper snow! I’m very jealous of all the snow everyone is having up North! Sometimes living in the bubble on the edge of the country has its drawbacks 😂

So here is a shot of a Buzzard in the snow that we actually had back in February!!

Photographing wildlife in the snow was one of my ultimate highlights this year!

Fingers crossed we get some this Winter!

Barn Owl at Sunrise Part 2 🌅

One of my most popular images is the original version of this shot that I took back in March.

This is the very same day, the very same owl, just a slightly different angle of it in flight.

I was going through my archives and found it…totally forgot I had it…I fired off quite a few shots that morning, the sky was just epic!

I love the position of the wings here! Hope the poor Barn Owls are staying safe with this horrendous weather!

‘Hours old’

This little ones Mum decided just the other side of the rope on the viewing platform was where she wanted to give birth! I quickly took this picture from behind the ropes of course and still at a very good distance away, crouched down as low as possible so as not to disturb the clearly exhausted Pup and Mum, this image is also cropped!

I’d been patrolling the area last week when I came across them…and then, I got to spend the morning keeping pup and Mum safe from humans getting too close. Being a Seal Warden is the most rewarding thing ever!

PLEASE NEVER approach or get too close to a seal pup and/or Mum!! The mum could get spooked and abandon the pup. If you stick to the designated viewing areas and give them space, you will be rewarded.

The Short Eared Owl 🦉

Taken earlier in the year, just before this beauty left to migrate back northwards after spending the Winter here.

It’s lovely to hear that they’re beginning to return and I do hope I get to see this one again soon and it stayed safe.

These owls often hunt during the daytime, well, all except this one it seemed as it tended to wait until the best light had gone! 😂 on occasion though it would oblige!

On this day the owl sat in this spot for a good couple of hours…perfectly relaxed and it actually remained there even after I decided to call it a day and it was quite dark! No back lit flight shot on that occasion sadly, must’ve still been full from the night before 😂

It was such a privilege to just be able to sit back and observe (from a very respectable distance of course!). I just love how it blends in here amongst the grass!

Shorties nest on the ground in scraped-out hollows lined with grass and downy feathers. They’re about the same size as the barn owl, but with longer wings and of course those stunning bright yellow eyes!

Fingers crossed for this year 🤞🏻

Turnstone 🤎🤍

These birds spend most of their time creeping and fluttering over rocks and on the shorelines, picking out food such as crustaceans and molluscs from under stones…hence the name!

I often see then weaving around the seals at Horsey and the pups in particular are quite fascinated by them when they scurry past 😂
