One interesting fact about Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is that it is said to be built on the site where Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, established a church in the 5th century.

Additionally, the Cathedral is known for having two separate cathedrals within its grounds: the older Gothic-style cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, and the newer Neoclassical-style cathedral, which was constructed in the 19th century.

But did you know the cathedral is home to the largest organ in Ireland, known as the Willis Organ. This magnificent instrument was built in 1904 and contains over 2,300 pipes.

Overall, Armagh Cathedral stands as a remarkable testament to Ireland's religious and cultural history, offering visitors an immersive experience that combines architectural splendor, musical excellence, and a glimpse into the region's past.

There are three bridges across the river at Portadown. Bridge Street and Northway are both road bridges and there is a railway bridge beside the Northway. The 'Bann Bridge' on Bridge Street is the oldest. The story of this bridge is unusual in that it was built without a river running underneath it. After building was complete, the course of the River Bann was diverted by some 100 yards to straighten a meander. The old riverbed was then built upon.

Designed by George Haplin, Haulbowline Lighthouse completed in 1824, is an active 19th century lighthouse. Described as an "elegant, tapering stone tower” it is located at the entrance to Carlingford Lough, near Cranfield Point in County Down, Northern Ireland.

The Lighthouse takes its name from the rocky bank on which it stands, a Norse name meaning ‘haunt of the eels’. Construction of Haulbowline’s stone tower, at 112 feet, on a semi-submerged rock with fast currents running around it, was a remarkable achievement at the time. Originally white in colour, the paint was removed in 1946 to reveal the stone beneath. The stone is of ashlar granite with a bell-mouth splay at its foot. This bell mouth profile reflects the fact that base of the tower is wave-washed and the need to reduce the impact of wave action.

The Haulbowline Lighthouse will celebrate its bicentenary in 2024.
