We never tire of the north and always something new to see at Cragside.. 📸

Experience Britain's original smart home. Illuminated by hydro-electricity and powered by hydraulics, this pioneering home was filled with Victorian gadgets for efficient modern living. Man-made lakes, tumbling waterfalls and swathes of rhododendron combine to form the surrounding fantasy mountain landscape imagined and engineered by inventor and arms manufacturer Lord Armstrong and his wife Lady Margaret.

You can wander amongst the towering trees in the Pinetum, explore the weaving paths and tumbling cascades in the Rock Garden and witness the changing seasons in the Formal Gardens. See the whole estate by car on the Carriage Drive where way-marked walks and wildlife are waiting to be discovered. Families can adventure through the labyrinth and swoop and slide in the newly extended play area too.

Low Force.. Part of the River Tees in beautiful Upper Teesdale. Low Force tumbles over the Whin Sill, a layer of hard dolerite rock (known locally as whinstone). The Whin Sill formed 295 million years ago from molten rock, which cooled and solidified underground.

Today, after millions of years of erosion it is exposed as rocky landscape features at Low Force, High Force and other places in Upper Teesdale.

The Pennine Way footpath route runs alongside the River at Low Force. Low Force is also easily accessible from Bowlees Visitor Centre.

High Force is one of the most impressive waterfalls in England. The River Tees has been plunging into this gorge for thousands of years but the rocks it reveals are far more ancient – with origins dating back over 300 million years!
