Very neglectful of me, I know, but I'm still doing the photo restoration, I just forget to post stuff that lets me show off what I've actually been doing. Here are three that posed many different logistical problems, from a poor original copy to a hand coloured final image 🤓

As I continue through the thousands of pictures in my archives, mostly in crumpled brown envelopes or old chocolate boxes from the 1950's. I have been restoring them as required and (when the mood takes me), colouring to enhance and hopefully improve them for everybody's enjoyment. 🙂

Most film in the late 70's and early 80's were sent off quite happily to be developed in photo printing factories around the U.K. Most of us used Ilford or Kodak 35mm on rolls and posted them off to be processed in a couple of weeks, or less if you paid for the express service. Machine prints, if they were not 'fixed' 100% would discolour with an overall purple haze.

I've been busy lately and have neglected this page (shame on me), but I have still been renovating and restoring pictures on a daily basis. Often people request different tints to go with their decor in rooms around the house, this has the benefit of livening up old photos and appears to modernise them from boring Black & White.

I still have many old monochrome photographs that need upgrading to a modern image. Sometimes adding colours is a detriment, anybody who has seen "Laurel & Hardy" movies colourised, can be disappointed by the very nature of it all. Still images, not so emotive. 🤨

I'm still re-colouring Black and White images to full colour, or a reasonable facsimile thereof. The software commercially available from medium priced to quite expensive doesn't work as advertised and for the most part, you'll be wasting your money. The very expensive software does work, but you'll still need a lot of skill and time to get results.

I'm still marginally obsessed with colouring old Black & White photographs to modernise them. The software is nowhere near as good as is advertised, so a certain degree of skill and manipulation is definitely required for total restoration. You will also need a substantial amount of solid patience and a swear jar to complete the task to your satisfaction.

People today think image manipulation, such as "Photoshop" is a modern phenomenon (other programs are available.) These images were originally monochrome photographs in 1870 that were then "improved" to create an impression that may not have been wholly accurate. In these cases, they have been 'over-painted' as Aquatints, thus altering the originals.

Sticking with the theme of a manual colouring, as opposed to an automatic computer restoration, I've added some more images to my portfolio. If you have a few subjects, this makes it much easier than large group shots, but it can be massively time consuming and great patience is required.

One of the more time consuming things in photographic restoration is to add colour to monochrome pictures. You can buy expensive software that will do some of the work, but often... you end up with a muddy red, ochre mess. It has problems deciphering clothing from soil and walls, so I do a lot of manual work and it looks pretty good.
