Regeneration

The industrial north was hit hard by Thatcher's de-industrialisation, jobs decimated and families forced to leave their homes to find work. Communities that had lived and worked together were pulled apart.

My father worked in the shipyards from the age of thirteen to become a plater, laying plates of steel to form the ship’s hull, until jobs became hard to find and he became a security advisor for a company in Abu Dhabi.

Until the age of nine I lived in Wallsend amongst the shipyard workers moving on to go to school amongst the children of Colliery workers from Shiremoor and Backworth. Since returning to the UK, I have lived in a couple of these left over communities from the Industrial era, North Blyth and Lynemouth. These two villages are linked by coal, Lynemouth mined it and North Blyth transported it by sea.

Over the past three and a half years I have been documenting the demolition of the Alcan Smelter Lynemouth and now its ‘regeneration’ into an industrial park. This work has prompted me into looking back on the village’s history. The village of Lynemouth was purpose built for the colliery workers and their families. North Blyth was also built for its workers of the port and colliery.

What now of these villages, their industries and their communities, how have they progressed, is the community spirit still evident?
