While sitting having my lunch at the top of a hill admiring the view, this beauty appeared from the woods completely oblivious to me being there.

I watched as it headed to the hedge to munch the freshly soaked grass then while it was distracted, I slowly moved to the side of the road and sat on the ground with my camera at the ready. After a little while, it wandered back across the road to the wpods, giving me a cheeky glance too 😊

Is it just me or does everyone else have the same problem? Quite often I see buzzards perched perfectly on a post or wall, I stop, slowly grab my camera, put my window down and lift the camera to take the shot. Then the buzzard ALWAYS takes flight the moment I go to press the shutter.

This photo is the only time in years where that hasn't happened! Driving along I spotted it sitting there, I did my usual routine knowing fine well it's going to fly like they always do but no, this one stayed still! It just looked me up and down as if to say, go on then, you can have this one 😂.

Needless to say, I was totally shocked I'd actually got a pretty decent close shot on a post of a buzzard. I can't tell you how many hours, days, weeks and months that I've sat in a freezing cold hide just to get one shot 🤣.

They may be common but I love these birds, they look absolutely amazing.

Cracking couple of hours watching a family of common buzzards hunting. It's been quite windy recently and these buzzards could be mistaken for kestrels at a quick glance. They seemed to be quite good at using the up drafts from the valley to hover with while scanning for prey.

I counted seven at one point which I'm not sure if that's usual or not for breeding but it's definitely fantastic to see.

I sat on the steep slope of a tall hill in my ghillie suit to hide and it gave me an amazing vantage point looking down on the buzzards as they soared by.

On Sunday I headed out to scout for some new astro photography locations in preparation for the coming months. On the drive I found a nice little spot for lunch, just next to a stream looking down a valley. Sitting eating my lunch, I spotted a few things flying around and even had what I think was a field mouse join me for its lunch too.

One of the birds I sat watching was a willow warbler (please correct me if I'm wrong). It kept on going up to the same flowers and almost hovered before very quickly flying off again. I couldn't understand what it was doing so decided to take a few photos and have a look. It turns out that the warbler was catching flies which incredibly I caught in one of my photos.

I guess it's the same old saying I always tell myself, the more photos you take, you more lucky you become 😊

I've seen short eared owls hunting quite a few times but there's one thing I've not seen until yesterday. I'd never actually seen one catch anything 😂.

Normally when you see another owl like a barn owl, they come out and within five minutes they're on their way back with their snack. Shorties for some reason just don't seem to have the same strike rate 🤔. That could be why people enjoy taking photos and watching shorties because you know they'll be out for a while.

Anyway, this shortie swooped down, ruffled in the long grass then popped back up onto a post with a catch. Meanwhile, a kestrel decided to come and have a look so the shortie hopped back off the post into the field and left its catch somewhere in there. It came back to the post and just kept looking at the kestrel above it, pretending there's nothing to see here! 😂

First time I've seen this type of behaviour and it was definitely worth hanging around for.

Another small selection from my trip to the North Pennines. This time it's the turn of a common buzzard (buteo buteo). Often seen and definitely heard as they have a very recognisable screech too.

Although I see these bird quite regularly, I've only managed a handful of photos over the years as they tend to disappear as soon as you lift your camera.

Wonderful birds to watch soar in the sky as they make it look effortless 😊

It's an absolute dream to see any wildlife at sunset when the light is just perfect.

Driving over the top of a hill on the moors, we spotted this owl hunting above a field just ahead of us. Slowly we pulled up, got out with our cameras and hoped it came closer for us to capture it. Watching the owl swoop, dive and glide in the beautiful subtle orange sunset was amazing. I manged to grab a few photos until the light completely dropped off and the owl headed further into the distance behind us.

Such a beautiful bird and always a privilege to watch one hunting too.

What an absolutely unreal evening yesterday!

I was invited by a good friend for a drive out to the North Pennines, a place I've been to a few times with the family but not had a proper wander or look with my camera.

Finally ticked off the last owl I've been wanting to photograph after a few years of frustration. The little owl, such an awesome little bird, full of character and possibly my favourite of all the owls.

The sun couldn't have been better too, not too harsh and not too dark and showed the beauty of these owls perfectly.

For the entire evening, I didn't know where to point my camera! Little owls, barn owls, short eared owls, buzzards, kestrels, deer, hares, grouse and pheasant all spotted along the way.

No kingfisher at the river today but I was joined by this beautiful pair of birds.

The green sandpiper. It's the first time I've seen these birds on this stretch and they spent a good while foraging in the margins for food. Noisy little things but a welcome sight for what was quite a slow and quiet time on the river.

Just goes to show that you never know, what you might come across but you have to be out to see anything in the first place 😊

Simply head to the weather page, choose your location (you can sign up for as many locations as you like) then on the left where the aurora stays are, there's an alert me button. Click that, choose your required kp level (I recommend 4+) then sit back and wait. I tested it and I've just had this notification for tonight, keep your eyes peeled if you're out and about 😉
