Ground squirrel - Spermophilus citellus - Ürge

European ground squirrels are much more fascinating than they look

They live in underground tunnel systems that can be over 2 metres deep, use different alarm calls to warn each other about predators, and spend up to 6–7 months hibernating underground. During hibernation their heart rate drops dramatically and they survive almost entirely on fat stored during summer.

They’re also considered an endangered species in parts of Central Europe because modern agriculture and disappearing grasslands have heavily reduced their natural habitat.
