There’s something unforgettable about the way a Short-eared Owl hunts — low over the fields, wings held in a shallow V, drifting like a moth on the wind.
Unlike many owls, they’re often active in daylight, especially at dusk when the light turns gold and the grasslands come alive. Those piercing yellow eyes scan constantly, listening as much as watching.

One of the most distinctive behaviours of the Common Redshank is its habit of suddenly flying up to perch on a fence post, driftwood stump, or marsh marker before launching into a loud, ringing call. Unlike many waders that remain low and discreet, redshanks will deliberately seek height — even if it’s only a metre or two above the ground. From this vantage point, they stretch upright, flick their wings slightly, and call repeatedly: a sharp, penetrating “teu-teu-teu!” that carries across the marsh.

Soon, I hope I’ll be able to photograph kingfishers again.
This image is from last year and shows a key part of their breeding behaviour. The male has caught a bullhead and is carefully turning it in his beak before offering it to the female. This fish presentation is part of their courtship and helps strengthen the pair bond before nesting.
Interestingly, while the male tolerates my presence (I’m fully camouflaged), the female is much more cautious. Rather than feeding her at this exact spot, he usually flies further down the stream to complete the exchange, away from anything he might perceive as a risk.
I also know of another kingfisher pair that is very tolerant of people, but their territory lies next to a busy walkway. Because their nesting site is nearby, I deliberately avoid photographing them — minimising disturbance during the breeding season is essential for their success.
Understanding behaviour and respecting space is just as important as the photograph itself.

It’s in the top 10 out of 52 weekly winners, which still feels a bit unreal and I’m incredibly proud.

Just to mention: liking the photo isn’t a vote, it has to be submitted via the form.
