Abergavenny Castle

Built by Hamelin de Ballon around 1087 to a traditional motte-and-bailey configuration. Initially timber, rebuilding in stone starting as early as 1100.

The refurbishment of the museum shop is complete.

Museum History

Friends of Abergavenny Museum committee saved the crumbling Regency 'Castle House' on the site of the Norman keep from demolition. They raised funds to create the first Abergavenny Museum in 1959. The committee went on to found Abergavenny Local History Society.

Llandaff Cathedral - The Lady Chapel (Completed in about 1280) is named in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus. When entering the Cathedral from the West door you will have an uninterrupted view through the concrete parabolic arch to the Lady Chapel. The modern stained glass of the 12th century east window represent the “Jesse Tree”, depicting the ancestors of Jesus as listed by St Matthew at the beginning of his Gospel account.

Llandaff Cathedral is picturesquely situated in a leafy hollow just below Cathedral Green, and close to the River Taff. The Cathedral will celebrate its 900th anniversary next year.
