Here are some photographs from the Treak Cliff Cavern Blue John Visitor Workshop. They show the process of making jewellery from Blue John - from rock to ring.

Large sizes versions of these, with short interpretive captions, will be mounted on the walls of the workshop for visitors to follow the process. This is part of the visitor centre revamp I've been involved in as part of inHeritage.co.uk.

I have had the privilege of photographing one of Treak Cliff Cavern's talented lapidarists working on a Blue John ring. I spent a day in Andy's company while he selected and shaped a piece of Blue John from the cavern and mounted it to a silver ring.

The project is to provide passive interpretation in the visitors' workshop at Treak Cliff's new visitor centre. This will interpret the processing of Blue John from mineral slice to jewellery in a series of photos displayed around the workshop.

I'm working on the images over the next few days, but thought I'd share this quick snap I took on my phone before I left. The last photograph we took as of the finished ring back in the place the Blue John was mined from.

Something I've wanted to photograph for a while is the medieval carving of T'Owd Man in St Mary's Church, Wirksworth. He's thought to be the oldest depiction of a lead miner, and is shown with a lead mining pick and kibble. he was originally found in Bonsal Church but was removed during renovation in 1863.

The exact date of the carving is unknown. Conventionally dated to the 13th century based on the date of Bonsal Church, he could be older and has artistic parallels in early medieval art.

He is now a symbol of Wirksworth. Representations of the carving are used by Wirksworth Running Club for an annual race, as part of Wirksworth Heritage Centre's branding, and by Peak District Mines Historical Society, Bonsall village newsletter 'Mutterings', Wirksworth Town Ambassadors, Wirksworth WordMiners Poetry Group, Wirksworth Wheelers and the Long Distance Walkers Association - the latter for a walk in the area.

He appears on t-shirts, cushions and mugs.
