It’s the end of Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week. Maternal mental health is why I started hosting the Bump Hour – it was my way of donating back to the local Home Start team after having incredible birth trauma counselling from them 💛
I appreciate it’s a thousand times easier to come forward years down the line and own that we struggled and needed help, but if you are having a hard time after having your baby DO go and ask for help.
I also know how incredibly hard it can be to get help! Despite actively asking for help, I got nothing for over 2 years! We moved into this area and still I had to fight pretty hard to get help because on the outside I looked “fine”. It was the craziest situation… it’s so hard to speak up and ask for help, just for people to then look at you and go “I think you are just bored…” 😞
Before getting pregnant I took for granted that maternal health issues would hit “other people”, not someone like me, I had my stuff together. I had a great job, we were married, had a lovely house, completely ready for a newborn with a brand new cream sofa 😉
Turns out this hits everyone, it’s ok if your wheels come off, tell someone…. In fact I met the most incredible, intelligent, successful other mums in that group ❤️
If you need help, make sure you ask for it, the local help here is amazing… or at least it was… I hope it still is.
This is why I go out of my way to create a super supportive experience for brand new mums coming with a newborn, providing reassurance all the way – I know we might look great on the outside but need holding on the inside x
