Earth 🌍 , Wind 💨 and Fire 🔥

This location was my main aim for the lunar eclipse shoot yesterday. I was trying to find a landscape to align the full moon with and the Southminster wind farm was perfect. The tricky part was finding a route at 4am in the dark.

What I was quite surprised at is following the blood orange eclipse that once the sun came up the shadow of the moon disappeared to reveal more of a crescent.

🌒 93% Lunar Eclipse

Alarm at 2am this morning to capture the moon as it reached 93% eclipse at 5:12am — deep in Earth’s shadow and glowing with an incredible copper-red colour.

Not quite totality, but still a pretty spectacular sight and definitely worth getting out of bed for. 📸

Taken from the Dengie Peninsular from which I'll share the landscape image tomorrow.

Masts in the Mist - as it happened

Behind the scenes images forming a sequence from the most amazing misty morning I’ve probably ever witnessed! October 2022, 6:29 - 6:47am.

The last image is one that I entered into the National Historic Ships photo competition 3 years ago that was highly commended in the classic boat category.

This years competition I’ll be in the judging panel and there’s only a few days left to enter.

Pudge Sailing Barge leaving the Hythe Quay, Maldon in full sail. Not something you see everyday but the wind and direction was perfect.

Thanks to Mick the skipper for getting up so many sails and pulling off a perfect departure for the Burnham Passage.

Salty souls

The wrecks of Pin Mill boat graveyard. The river takes a piece with every tide.

Sunrise on the River Orwell near Ipswich is the home to these old vessels. Every time I visit they look more part of the river.

Full Circle

The Maldon solar eclipse sequence at approx 92% coverage.

My creative take on the whole sequence from start to finish. Not perfect stages but I nice way to remember the evening.

I hope anyone who attempted to watch it enjoyed the spectacle.

I decided to head to the top of London Road in Beeleigh looking over the Chelmer Valley. One of the best places in Maldon for sunset.

I wasn’t the only person as a small gathering watched through glasses, welding masks, colanders and home made periscopes. There was even a couple of photographer’s capturing a timelapse which was cool.

☀️ Solar eclipse ready! 🌒📸

Are you planning to watch the solar eclipse on Wednesday evening?

I’m getting my kit ready — solar glasses ✔️, camera ✔️, and hopefully a solar filter arriving on Tuesday… because photographing the Sun without one is generally considered a fairly bad idea. 😂

For anyone who hasn’t heard about it, on Wednesday 12 August the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, giving us a deep partial solar eclipse here in Essex.

📍 Essex timings:
🌘 Eclipse begins — 6:16pm
🌑 Maximum — 7:12pm, with around 92% of the Sun covered
☀️ Eclipse ends — 8:05pm

The really interesting bit for photographers is that the Sun will be getting fairly low in the western sky, so I’m already thinking about possible foregrounds and landscapes to put underneath it. 🌅📷

And yes, I’ll be hoping for that elusive combination of a clear sky, interesting light and a camera that decides to cooperate. 😆

Important bit: please don’t look directly at the Sun, even during the eclipse. Proper ISO-certified eclipse glasses are needed for viewing, and cameras need a dedicated solar filter too. Regular sunglasses definitely don’t count!

Anyone else planning to have a go at photographing it? What are you hoping to capture?
