The Rules and Value of Second Shooting 📸
THE VALUE
As a young photographer and videographer, I've started my journey by learning from other established and successful photographers and videographers. I believe that this is an essential first step toward becoming an expert in your field.
Second shooting has allowed me to build my portfolio, expand my skill set, and work as part of a team. If your hiring a second shooter the benefits are of course; more coverage, alternative angles, and an additional skillset on the team.
THE RULES:
When working alongside a lead photographer/videographer it's important to know when to be quiet and let the lead direct the subject, a multitude of shooters on one subject can be a) overwhelming and b) a hindrance to the lead who's trying to achieve their vision.
Extra note - If anybody approaches you for your details, you give them the details of the lead shooter. Always put the needs of your lead shooter first.
ADVICE:
If you are like me and want to shoot for other photographers and videographers, my advice would be to reach out to the professionals you admire, preplan the team roles before you start shooting, and follow the rules of second shooting written above.
Your role might be to shoot from an alternative angle, help with lighting, or shoot a second subject elsewhere.
Comment below and tell me about your experience being or working with second shooters, I'd love to talk more.
