🦉 Those eyes know something…

I’ve spent countless hours photographing big cats, bears and other headline-grabbing animals, but sometimes it’s the quieter subjects that stop you in your tracks.

This beautiful owl sat perfectly still for just a moment, giving me the chance to capture those incredible golden eyes and the intricate detail hidden within its feathers.

No dramatic action.
No chase.
No roar.

Just a brief moment of eye contact.

And honestly, that’s sometimes all you need.

Sometimes they just sit in the shade, watching.

There’s something about wolves that has always fascinated me. They have a reputation for being fierce hunters, yet some of my favourite moments are the quieter ones—when the pace slows down and you get a glimpse of their calm, thoughtful side.

Caught resting in the dappled light, this beautiful wolf seemed completely at ease, keeping a watchful eye on everything around her.

A reminder that strength doesn’t always need to be loud.

🐅 “Editing does all the work…”
A phrase every wildlife photographer has heard.

The reality?

Editing didn’t give Altai those piercing eyes.
It didn’t place him beneath that tree.
And it certainly didn’t create that subtle light catching the edge of his fur.

What it did do was help guide your attention to the moment that made me press the shutter.

Among the greens of the tropical house sat this beautiful little lizard, perfectly camouflaged until the light caught that eye.

It’s easy to think of wildlife photography as lions, tigers and elephants, but some of my favourite moments come from slowing down and noticing the smaller residents.

Sometimes all it takes is one glance. 🦎

🐅 Tiger Tuesday 🐅

Some animals demand your attention.
Others don't have to.

Altai has always been one of my favourites at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Even at rest, there's a quiet confidence about him that makes it impossible to walk past without stopping for a moment.

On this occasion, the late afternoon light was just catching the edges of his fur, giving a subtle glow around his face while those amber eyes stayed locked on the world around him.

A king doesn't always need to roar. Sometimes he just watches. 👑

One of the things I love most about photographing Altai is his patience. He'll often settle down for a while, giving you time to work on composition and wait for that perfect expression. This was one of those moments where the light, pose and eye contact all came together.

🐘 Safe in the middle.

No matter how big the world seems, there's always comfort in staying close to family.

Young elephant calf Zaiya walks between the adults of the herd, surrounded by protection, guidance and a lot of love. Moments like this are a reminder that even the largest animals on Earth start out small.

This wasn't a planned image. I was watching the herd move across the enclosure when Zaiya slipped perfectly between the adults for just a few seconds. Sometimes the best wildlife moments are the ones you don't see coming. 🐘❤️

🐘 Little Zaiya.

Still tiny, still finding her feet, but already the centre of attention wherever she goes.

Watching her explore while never straying too far from the safety of the herd was easily one of the highlights of my first visit to Blackpool Zoo.

The Look™️

I’ve photographed lions, tigers, leopards, bears and all kinds of wildlife…

But none of them have ever judged me quite as hard as this ostrich. 😅

I don’t know what I did.

One moment the path was empty.

The next, Altai was standing between the trees, watching everything.

For an animal that can weigh over 300kg, Amur tigers have an incredible ability to move almost silently through their environment. It’s easy to see why they’re such effective predators.

🐸 Hidden in the tropical houses are some of the zoo's most spectacular residents.

Hidden away in the tropical houses are some of the smallest residents, and often some of the most colourful.

From the electric blue poison dart frog to the tiny orange and black dart frogs, these little amphibians might only be a few centimetres long, but they make incredible photography subjects.

They're also a reminder of just how diverse the natural world is. Sometimes the most eye-catching animals aren't the biggest.
