That last stretch of woodland light hits differently.

On the way back to the car, camera nearly packed away, this little robin stepped into the afternoon sun and just glowed. I couldn’t not stop.

That close-up though… feathers lit like fire and that deep, glassy eye holding the whole woods inside it. A quiet, golden end to the walk 🥰

Not my first bug macro… but my first proper one with the macro lens.

An orange ladybird resting on a holly leaf in the New Forest, caught in the warmth of the afternoon winter sun. No flash, just natural light picking up those soft cream spots and that almost translucent shell.

The chaffinch 🥰

I’ve never posted one before and I honestly don’t know why. They’re not rare, not flashy… just quietly beautiful.
It was a cold, crisp morning, the kind where your fingers feel it before anything else. But then the sun crept over the trees and everything turned gold. For a few moments, he just stood there in the light, completely still, letting the sunrise do its thing.

Sometimes winter mornings are worth the numb hands.

He sat there like a little ball of fire against the cold.
Robins always seem so perfectly put together but on mornings like this they fluff themselves up into tiny feathered spheres. It’s not just for show, by puffing up, they trap pockets of air between their feathers, creating a layer of insulation that helps them hold onto precious warmth 🥰

I love how the early light can completely change a moment. One second it’s just a blue tit on a bracken stem… then the sun hits and everything comes alive.

He only stayed for a heartbeat before darting off but that little pause was enough 🥰

Following on from my landing blue tit a couple of weeks ago, here he is a few seconds later… takeoff.

Look closely… you can see just the very tip of a single claw still touching the bracken stem. The rest of him is already committed to flight.

Nature doesn’t wait… but sometimes, if you’re patient enough, it lets you borrow a frame ✨

Here’s another mushroom from my hunt a couple of weekends ago 🍄
I experimented with a few angles and lighting setups, but this backlit view really stood out, the way the gills glow felt a bit magical.
What do you think? Would you like to see the other versions?

Pretty lucky last weekend to still find a few mushrooms 🍄 This tiny one was clinging to tree bark right as I was heading out of the forest, paused for a quick sip of tea, and there it was!!

Another robin, surprise, surprise 😁
This little beauty followed me around the forest at the weekend while I was hunting mushrooms (found three different ones… coming soon 👀🍄).
Absolutely loved this moment in a holly tree 🥰

That little robin face has to be one of my favourite winter sights. All puffed up, quietly curious and completely unbothered by the world. Soft light, quiet woods and this tiny flash of orange were all I needed.

Do close‑up portraits like this make you feel more connected to these birds, or do you prefer seeing a bit more of the scene? Let me know in the comments 😊

Saturday was cold and grey but this little blue tit still turned up to brighten the day. I had my in Pro Capture mode ready just as it came in, moments before landing on this bracken stem. Cloudy days might feel a bit dull but the soft light and these tiny surprises are what make being out there with a camera feel genuinely special 🥰
