Time for a change. Headshots Days are out. Bespoke sessions are in.

Over the last few months I've noticed a distinct change in the way people want their headshots and how they need to manage their time.

Bespoke headshot sessions means you can choose an appointment most convenient to you and it gives you better use of your time. Bespoke sessions also mean we have much more flexibility on styling and locations. More and more clients are wanting to add some brand content too. And because the sessions are tailored to each client, we can create unique headshots, unique brand photography and unique content.

You just can't do that with a headshots day, a branding mini shoot or a contenting day.

I love the way Emma Guy has used one of her new headshots from her session with me in March. And it's brilliant to see that she has been nominated for the She Inspires Awards 2026.

I've been taking Emma's headshots for well over a decade. I think the first time was back in 2013 when we called headshots business portraits. Working with long term clients is brilliant and a reassuring endorsement that you're doing something well enough that they want to work with you again.

Last week I met up with with Improv Actor and teacher Escobedo for a headshots session on the streets of Chester.

I used to shoot most of my headshots this way so it was brilliant to do this again. It made me realise that’I’d like to do more shoots like this.

Don’t get me wrong, I love doing studio style headshots. They offer a different kind of challenge, but with the right client, headshots on the street really rock.

Izzy Curtis popped over to Lymm for her new headshots on Monday. Izzy wanted natural light and real backgrounds and the weather was good so we had a walk around the village and chose a few places to use as backdrops. I used to shoot all my headshots like this when I started because I had no clue about using flash or studio backdrops.

It was really refreshing to use nothing more than a wide open aperture (f2 for those who are interested) and a reflector for a bit of fill light. Ands the photo looks fabulous even if I say so myself.

A big thank you back to skentelbery for posting yesterday about his new headshots which I took at my February headshots day a couple of weeks ago.

Here's a selection of headshots from the session, appropriate to Gary's very different roles as a journalist and business owner and his passion project as a Rock DJ with Radio Warrington. I also took some fuller length portraits of him and I'll do a post about those (and the difference between a headshot and a portrait) later in the week.

No better way to start the week than with a five star review. This one is from Anne Hughes and it's a cracker. I think most of us find it a bit awkward to ask for reviews. I do too but I'm trying hard to ask for them, and people are very willing to give them when I ask.

I'm reading the book at the moment. I wasn't sure how it would apply to a one person business like mine. I've been pleasantly surprised about how relevant it is to my little business. Although it's really aimed at business leaders if you are a business of one you still need direction and leadership.
