Martin Evening Excellence in Digital Retouching Award 2024
Spanning both photographic stills and short-form film, recognising outstanding work in digital retouching and post-production.

Entries Open: 20 March 2024
Entries Close: 13 May 2024

Digital retouching and post-production image manipulation for commissioned or personal work, applied to still and moving imagery. Submissions must demonstrate levels of editing, grading, picture and audio finishing, deliverables and international versioning, as well as visual effects showing a high degree of proficiency in post-production techniques, producing images with the utmost visual impact within a contemporary creative framework.

Judges will be looking at essential aspects which includes photographic application of skills, the use of conceptual and aesthetic application, as well as visual effects, colour grading, audio post, screen graphics, shoot and edit and broadcast technology. Submissions may include the use of AI-assisting tools, but excludes any fully AI-generated works.

About Martin Evening:
Launched in 2023, this Award this special Award, initiated by the Association of Photographers, is dedicated to commemorating the late Martin Evening, a highly influential photographer who was an early pioneer of digital retouching, and to acknowledge his contribution to the excellence in digital retouching within our industry.

A long-standing member of the AOP (Membership No. 20), Martin Evening was a noted photographer, expert digital retoucher, author and teacher. Martin had a successful 25-year career as a London based, award-winning portrait, beauty, and advertising photographer, working with some of the biggest names in hairdressing.

This is an open award and anu individual retoucher or team may enter.

Photo London’s Master of Photography for 2024 is one of France’s most popular and acclaimed photographers, Valérie Belin.

We are proud to present the exhibition ‘Silent Stories’, where Belin presents three decades of her work, reflecting an iconography that is deliberately silent, through images that — in the words of their creator — ”are neither narrative nor documentary and tell no particular stories, but are designed to be seen as the mirror of fictions without words.”

Showcasing a selection of large-format photographs that span from the late 1990s to today, and featuring her latest series, Lady Stardust (2023) presented for the first time in London, ‘Silent Stories’ sees Belin’s progression from black and white to colour, and from silver to digital, appropriating the technological changes in photography in her search for a new ontology.

REDEYE ( The photographers Network) have posted an article on the current interest in NFt's where the artist Beeple made big money using this unique indentification system, which has always been the achilles heal for digital artwork having any creditability as unique artwork. Quote:

One NFT that sparked widespread interest in the market was Beeple’s sale in March of 2021. Digital artist Mike Winkelmann (who goes by the name Beeple) had made a piece of artwork every single day for 13 and a half years, putting all the pictures together in a collage called ‘Everydays: The First 5000 Days’. This NFT sold for $69 million, making it the most expensive NFT ever sold and the fourth most expensive artwork by a living artist. After this sale there seemed to be a huge surge of interest in NFTs; many artists excited by this possibility of making big money.'
