Ray Gumbley Photography

Ray Gumbley Photography Fine Art Portrait Photographer I create art that explores the beauty hidden within life's challenges and complexities.

My work focuses on themes like chaos, grief, loss, social isolation, and loneliness—subjects often considered ugly or difficult. Through my art, I aim to show that beauty isn't limited to what's conventionally attractive or perfect. Instead, I find beauty in the raw, honest emotions that come with adversity. I use contrasts, symbolism, and storytelling to help viewers see the beauty in the struggl

e. My art invites people to reflect on their own experiences and connect with the universal aspects of these themes. I believe that even in the darkest moments, there is a glimmer of beauty waiting to be discovered. Thank you for joining me on this journey to find beauty in life's challenges. Boutique portrait photography commissions also taken up for creative ideas from individuals, couples, businesses or organisations, actors, dancers, models, fashion designers, still life models or performers portfolios

Photographs are like little USB drives of the soul—tiny, often dusty, and but always full of memories you forgot you had. They freeze time, capture bad hair days and birthday cakes mid-collapse, and remind us that yes, like at this moment, Kai for his prom did get a Mohican (a beautiful Mohican) and his mates did write those things on his shirt on leaving day. In a world that moves too fast, photos are proof that we were there and with those special people, we laughed, we lived—and occasionally, and as in most photographs, yes you blinked at the wrong moment but not in Kai’s case.

Spent Wednesday in Birmingham with a friend doing some street photography. Over 20,000 steps to be precise as we wandered through Gas Street, the Mailbox, along the canals, and up to the Library’s “not-so-secret” garden. Grabbed some delicious Indian street food in the Bull Ring, explored the Custard Factory, caught three exhibitions, and took in all the incredible graffiti art along the way.

We ended the day with a couple of pints in a pub that’s been standing since 1368 in Digbeth. What really struck me while sitting there was just how many people must have passed through that space—how many feet had walked those floors, looked down its well and how many pints and gins had been drunk and how many eyes had watched the Digbeth area change over the centuries.

Now an industrial but very creative hub, Digbeth seems to be going through yet another transformation. I couldn’t help but imagine how it all looked, smelt, and felt hundreds of years ago. It made me reflect on how brief our time really is compared to the bricks and timber that surround us—how we’re just adding our footprints to the layers of those who came before us, and those still to come.

So pleased to be a part of this. A massive thank you to Arts Derbyshire
