James McDowell Photography

James McDowell Photography I specialise in capturing the natural landscape and wildlife of Britain and Ireland.

I have been passionate about Photography for over thirty years and specialize in capturing the natural landscape and wildlife of Britain and Ireland. In the early years I undertook a correspondence course to learn the basic skills of photography - light, exposure and composition. The local camera club was a good source of information and learning experience from like minded men and women.

I have enjoyed photographing the birds in my garden over the past couple of weeks. The weather has been so good and the birds are busy getting on with singing, nesting and raising young. It has made me appreciate what is on my doorstep and I have observed behaviours for the first time. Birds and nature do us the world of good if we only sit down, relax and patiently observe the world around us. Try it and see.

There is lots going on around Rathlin from passing waders feeding on the shore to Ravens bullying the Guillemots and stealing their eggs. A Cattle Egret a rare bird for Rathlin appeared wandering among the sheep and curious lambs. Birds frantically coming and going all day in the race to reproduce. Puffins; the clowns of the sea are the most popular residents that everyone wants to see.

A few shots taken recently at Kinbane head. Kinbane castle was built by Colla MacDonnell. There were several sieges by English forces in the 1500's and was partly destroyed in 1555. It was later presented to the clan McAllister for their loyalty to the MacDonnell's were it remained in their decendants until the 18th century.

Our coast can be beautifully breath taking at any time of the year. Weather patterns flow mainly from the Atlantic Ocean in the west so every day is different and the light always changing. How we use and capture the light whatever the weather is the very essence of capturing the emotions we feel in being within the landscape.

We have a wonderfully beautiful and rugged coastline stretching for miles and very accessible. With stunning sunrises and sunsets it's not hard to realise why so many visitors flock here from far and wide to experience it for themselves.
