Happy Birthday Ron!

Brothers Ron and Russell Mael formed their first band Halfnelson in Los Angeles in 1968 and issued their debut album four years later when the two brothers also opted to re-name their band Sparks. After the UK Number 2 success of their debut single ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’ and the Top 5 album Kimono My House in 1974, Sparks notched up a string of hit singles and albums during the 70s. Their 1980 album Terminal Jive disappointed in the UK, but was a big hit in Europe and elsewhere. The pair returned to the charts in the 1990s and in 1997 issued a new version of their first hit under the billing Sparks vs Faith No More. To date they have released 28 albums!

The outfit are still going strong!

I loved Sparks! They’re a great band who made some terrific music and had a wonderfully weird image. Brothers Ron and Russell worked brilliantly off each other and understood the dynamic of a photo shoot, making them superb subjects. I shot several sessions with them and we became good friends for a while. The black and white shots for the Terminal Jive album were from one of the strangest and funniest shoots I have ever done!

*Stoned Sundays*

This odd shot of Mick and Brian was taken during the rehearsals for the January 1967 performance on the TV show “Sunday Night at the London Palladium” which was the most important, televised variety show in the UK at the time. The band caused a sensation by refusing to go on the carousel at the end of the show which was the tradition and all the performers were expected to appear.

Cats On Film!

I photographed a lot of animals both for record covers and advertising and it was always a challenge, domestic cats were always tricky and big cats were terrifying - my big cat wrangler would always lecture the crew before a shoot to explain that these animals would kill us if they get the opportunity - we never lost anyone!

I believe that the cat Mick is holding belonged to Chrissie Shrimpton, his girlfriend at the time, but I can’t be certain. Charlie and Shirley had house pets who were just around and fitted the “At Home” concept. I seem to remember that Ian McLagan brought along his cat to the session because we were shooting his portrait for the Ogden’s Nut Gone album cover and we wanted personal elements.

Cows and horses in the studio were always a worry because if they crapped the studio would stink for days!

Mick entertaining fans backstage somewhere in America on the Autumn 1965 tour of America.

In some venues, local chapters of the Stones fan club were invited to decorate the dressing room and to come backstage to meet the band. Mick was always very patient and generous with his time!

Happy Birthday Cat Stevens!

After debuting on the chart in 1966 with his first single ‘I Love My Dog’, 19-year-old Cat Stevens continued as a successful and influential for-pop artist and songwriter throughout the 60s and 70s. With six UK Top 10 albums, the half-Greek and half-Swedish London-born singer also released the best selling singles ‘Matthew And Son’, ‘Moonshadow’ and ‘Morning Has Broken’ before formally embracing Islam, changing his name to Yusef Islam and officially retiring from pop music in 1981. In recent years he has returned to give both live performances and make recordings, including a 2004 hit version of ‘Father and Son’ with Ronan Keating.

These portraits were taken early in Cat’s career and were shot in his flat above the family cafe in central London.

*Stoned Sundays*

In celebration of The Rolling Stones' new album recently posted from the location of their 5th studio album cover "Between The Buttons" released in 1967.

The photo on the album sleeve was taken on Primrose Hill in London in November 1966 early in the morning following one of their infamous all-night-long recording sessions at Olympic Studios in Barnes.

I created the smeared effect by using Vaseline on a piece of glass in front of the lens of my Hasselblad 500C camera to amplify that feeling of a stoned all-night session going into daybreak.

The Rolling Stones have just released their 25th studio album, Foreign Tongues. If you have listened to the album - what is your favourite song off the record?
