This weekend is the official anniversary of Goole's bicentenary. Although celebrations are planned for the full year, today and tomorrow see a number of events to mark the town's milestone.

Goole museum opened their superb exhibition of Reuben Chappell paintings which showcases several works never seen in public before. It runs until 24th October.

The other main event today was a flotilla of boats which toured the docks. Organised by the Yorkshire Waterways Heritage Society, a whole range of small vessels including working boats, preserved heritage vessels, narrow boats and cruisers paraded in front of a good crowd of onlookers. It was great to see these "small ships" decked out with flags and bunting, their owners and crews thoroughly enjoying the event.

Selby Swans '26. Nine cygnets this year.

An evening stroll along the canal at Selby and surprised to see a Common Tern swooping along the water looking for fish. Very difficult tracking it as it was super swift, but got a few decent attempts. Spectacular bird! Also included, a Black-Headed Gull taking off from the mud banks on the Ouse.

Some photos from a cracking day's climbing on Sunday. A couple of the sub 3000ft peaks around Yr Wddfa were conquered and some absolutely stunning views enjoyed. A steep ascent and an even steeper descent means new knees have had to been ordered from an online retailer...

Another Goole event this week with the re-opening of the Market Hall after a complete refurbishment. The 1896-built building has been transformed into a vibrant food hall and events venue operated by Brew York.

Ol' SydPix was invited to the pre-opening bash on Tuesday and the Hall was formally opened this afternoon.

It's a superb restoration and the building looks stunning. So good to see a healthy number of people heading in through the doors to check it out this afternoon.

So sad to hear of the passing of Paul Jackson. I started going to the Adelphi a few years after it opened and for years was my musical home. Some fantastic nights with established and up-and-coming bands and musicians, some of whom became huge stars. Local bands too often cut their teeth here. Without Paul, Hull would have missed out on so much music, and his vision and dedication is simply immeasurable.

I specifically looked out for this shot during the City of Culture "We Are Hull" show and it was utterly fitting to see him projected onto the side of the City Hall.

RiP Jacko, One Man and His Bog. You absolute legend.

Pompeii is somewhere ol' SydPix has wanted to visit since he was a nipper. Finally got to go after heading over to Naples last week, and visited Pompeii, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and Herculaneum. All three sites are amazing and between them graphically show the aftermath of the violent eruption of Vesuvius in AD79.

The details of the eruption are staggering; a 21-mile column of ash and pumice was hurled into the sky. Herculaneum alone was buried under thirty metres of volcanic rock, Pompeii and other villages and settlements were completely buried, and the whole coastline was dramatically altered. Vesuvius is currently dormant, but still active. The last eruption was in 1944 and the next one will potentially affect over 3 million people who live in the surrounding area.
