Spring is nearly here, so birds are going to be active building nests.

To get great shots of birds in flight, set your camera to Shutter Priority or Manual mode. Choose a shutter speed of 1/2000th or higher, aperture of f/4 or f/5.6, set your camera to it’s base ISO and then turn on Auto ISO. Use continuous low or high bursts and focus with the AF-ON back button focus technique.  The cameras needs to be in AF-C mode as well. Activate one of the many Autofocus modes on your camera. For DSLRS, GRP can be a great choice, for Z series, either Auto Area with Animal tracking or maybe wide area small or large depending on the size of subject in your frame.

Planning ahead for your landscape photography shoot can give you great results! 📸

Start by checking weather forecast and always make sure to get to your location nice and early, ideally before Sunrise or just before Sunset. Immerse yourself in your chosen location. Look around and watch how the light interacts with the landscape around you. Use your senses. Can you hear any wildlife? Maybe wind blowing through the trees? This can guide you to subjects you may never have considered capturing before.

Always make the most of your time to create stunning photographs that capture the essence of the scene.

Clear cold nights in Winter can make for some amazing Astro and Aurora Photography 📸

We’ve been teaching Aurora Photography on our recent Iceland workshop and our 4 top tips are:

1. Using Aurora tracking apps and websites, find a location away from light pollution to give you the best chance of seeing the Aurora.

2. Start with baseline settings of Manual mode, Matrix Metering, ISO 1600 or 2000 and go for the lowest aperture your lens allows such as f/1.8 or f/2.8.

3. Shutter speeds of 10 – 15 secs are a good start point. As the Aurora gets brighter or moves, reduce your shutter to 8 or 6 secs.

4. Take time out to just enjoy the spectacle of the Aurora dancing in the sky.

2023 is the year to upskill your photography! Here’s one of Neil’s top tips for improving your portraiture game:

“Connecting with your subjects is really important in portraiture. Even if you’re really close to the subject, people have a habit of freezing in front of the camera, talking to them can make help put them at ease.”

Cityscapes can be just (or very nearly…) as enchanting as rolling hills of snow, the key is knowing how to capture their beauty. 🌆📸

Our top tip is playing around with colour. Cityscapes can have striking variations of colour with glass and metal surfaces reflecting light. Find white balance in your camera's shooting menu and experiment with different settings.
