It is always exciting to attend the Serpentine Pavilion preview.
The one of this year is among my favourites being a wonderful call to action for exchange and conviviality crafted with wit and precision; Lina Gotmeh's pavilion, entitled "A' table", is in fact an invitation to sit around a table, share a meal, with all the attributes of care that this entails, and initiate a dialogue.

In a time characterised by international tension on the one hand, isolation in virtuality and haters on the other, it fills me with hope to be still be able to make such simple and concrete gestures like sitting down at a table and sharing ideas and stories, traditions and opinions with who is around me.

In a World in which people are still too often valued for what they can objectively give, or individuals claim to befriend only people with whom they can never disagree; it is refreshing to be in a place that incites to find a time and a silence to connect and listen to each other, exchange knowledge and experiences, and get to understand each other.

This is a concrete conceptual gesture of optimism that also stimulates us to reconnect with the natural environment through a central source of natural light and ventilation, references to the surrounding natural forms, and attention to the sustainability of the materials used and of the entire project.

The Design District rises at the heart of Greenwich Peninsula and is a low-rise village of sixteen free-standing buildings and a market hall located around five courtyards, that provide 14,000 sqm of studio space for makers in the creative industries and manufacturing.

With a masterplan overseen by HNNA, and 16 buildings designed in pairs of 2 by 8 different architectural practices, the district presents a distinctive urban character and it allows expression for a range of varied styles.
Each building achieve a discrete identity, that is mirrored and varied in the other component of the pair, deliberately not adjacent.
Variation and individualisation of building character is encouraged and supported.

The A1 building is designed by Barozzi Veiga for artists ateliers and presents large windows, different in shape, high ceilings and external staircases to provide the maximum of light and space to its tenants.
The simple and rigorous volume is wrapped in a polished aluminium facade that reflects the light changes during the day and seasons, brightening and interacting with its surrounding.

The Marshall Building by Grafton architects is a new major development for the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) . The triangular cavity that interrupts the regular formality of the facade facing Lincoln's Inn Fields, anticipates the angled branches of the structural concrete trees that can be seen in the interiors, while harmonising with the other more tormented sides of the building and rebalancing the complex heterogeneity of this architecture.

The Bureau building, also designed by the practice HNNA, offers co-working open spaces and studios specifically designed for creatives. The undulating white facade offers a less predictable use of the space in the interiors, creating unexpected pockets of space in the open plan, while the unfolding of the facade breaks down the building mass from the outside.

On the occasion of the presentation of Sguardi Contemporanei 2022 I am happy to present here too my project Sleeping Space.

The series stems from an enquiry: what kind of opportunities can good architecture offer to a city and its community over time? What potential is lost without it?
What possibilities open up when spaces are utilised differently from the planners’ original vision?

The area of the former wholesale market in Turin is used here as a case in point: built during the 1930s, it was converted into the hub of the Olympic district in 2006 with an architectural design focused on its future reuse and the gentrification of the urban area. According to the authorities’ plans it should have become an international, scientific and technological epicentre, but, instead, it was abandoned and became home for hundredds of refugees, an event described in the media as Europe's largest illegal occupation.

The images were taken during the securing phase that followed the eviction of this community and coincided with a sort of "putting out of service" of the space, pending the approval of a new retrofit project.

The Ex MOI is property of the Città di Torino.
