Last week I took my portrait lighting kit to a networking event as an experiment... Would people sit for portraits at a networking event?

The answer was yes.

This photography background was blue - like SUPER blue! It's a chromokey background and it's used as a green screen.

I bought a grey background, but it was delayed by 5 weeks - so I decided to take this and turn the shots black and white instead.

I think they came out brilliantly!

A pretty long story, so here we go.

I have a headshot shoot in London in a few days time. I'll be at a networking event shooting headshots for linkedin.

To prepare for this I ordered a backdrop - grey. It was delayed by 5 weeks, so I asked for my money back.

It so happened that my housemate has a blue backdrop which is usually used for video shoots to remove the background. I tried this with some self portraits and it was HORRIBLE!!

The blue reminded me of far east school portraits. No one in their right minds would want a headshot on this kind of blue background.

I then thought - can I convert them to black and white.

Turns out I can - and here is the result.

It's NOT perfect because my eyes aren't in focus... but it's good enough for the moment. This is butterfly lighting, umbrella square on and top down.

I think it looks really good.

Here are some of the shots I took at Networx London.

This was a project I did over the last month, learning more about flash photography and low light shooting.

I was particularly impressed with how the portraits came out!

I love these portraits!

This is butterfly lighting, or paramount lighting. You can get this when you light from just in front and above the subject.

I got these at an event in London hosted by Networx.

It was a lot of fun to shoot and these portraits were the cherry on top.

My first "portrait" with my new lighting kit.

I think this looks pretty good.
This is flat lighting, with the umbrella firing straight at my face from a little higher up.

I like the light in the eyes, which brings it alive.

The background could be better. I have plans to get a grey background for portraits. This would control the background a bit better.

All in all - not bad.

ALL my off-camera flash gear has FINALLY arrived. The flash triggers were a pain. I ordered a pair that didn't work!! So...

ALL my off-camera flash gear has FINALLY arrived.

The flash triggers were a pain. I ordered a pair that didn't work!! So I had to re-order a new and more expensive pair.

This is a mobile portrait and headshot kit... I have a shoot on Sunday. Let's see what I can do with it.

I've taken some selfies already which I might post. My hair was a mess, but the lighting rocks!!

Just another image from the BMA summer party - this guy - mid sip, but I like the way he's staring me straight down the lens.

This image is in a reportage style - I'm working on shooting at 35mm and closer to people - but it's not easy. People can see my camera a mile away. It's about the same size as my head!

I shot an event recently - the IQVIA summer party 2025.

This was held in BMA house - central london. The courtyard was in shade, which made for good lighting. There was some light bouncing around the court yard from high windows.
Due to it being open air, there was little to bounce my flash off - plus the light was good enough for natural light photography.

White walls meant I had to up the exposure compensation to match.... thoughts?
