To celebrate International Women’s Day 2026, the Royal Hospital Chelsea is delighted to partner with photographer Jackie King to display a collection of never-before-seen photographs showing some of the 19 female Chelsea Pensioners who currently call the Royal Hospital their home.

Women were first admitted to the Royal Hospital Chelsea as Chelsea Pensioners in 2009, a full three hundred and seventeen years after the Hospital first opened its doors to Army veterans. Since 2009, many women have chosen to become part of the Royal Hospital community, donning their scarlet coats with pride. Yet today - seventeen years later - many people are still surprised when they meet a female Chelsea Pensioner.

Through her photos, Jackie King highlights the character of some of the female Chelsea Pensioners currently resident with us. Showcasing the individualism of each sitter, she shares their unique stories visually, while representing how embedded in the Royal Hospital community female Pensioners are today.

In celebration of QEST’s 35th anniversary and ‘Investing in the Future of Craft’ Campaign, I am sharing how a QEST grant has supported my practice, waaay back in 2006 I gained a scholarship to study for my first masters in Fashion Photography at The London College of Fashion. I was the first scholar to receive the award for digital photography + it set me firmly on the path to running my own business. Over the course of this week I'm going to share just how their belief in me shaped my future and how their support for British craft has created an amazing community of crafts people who continue to support each other + shine a light on the talented artisans we have.

QEST = The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust

🌟 To date QEST has supported over 900 craftspeople working across the UK in 130 craft disciplines. Support from individuals and organisations ensure QEST can continue to provide transformative opportunities for talented and aspiring makers across the UK, for the next 35 years and beyond.

The BIGGEST 'THANK YOU'

Thank you all for trusting me with your events, your headshots, your special moments and new chapters, for your happiest moments and on one occasion, the saddest. For understanding or at least accepting the 'method in my maddness'when I'm saying "just one more!!" Or "quick THE LIGHT!!!"

Each and every moment I've spent photographing has been a total gift I'm ALWAYS grateful for and never take for granted. It's a gift to be able to do what you love and it's made even more special by all the people I've had the pleasure to photograph and create pictures for- I know that might sound a little twee but it's true, when I'm not photographingi actually get quite grumpy bcos a part of me is missing. So THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for riding this crazy train with me, here's to another 20 years!!! xx
