Block printing in Barmer, Rajasthan. One of my favourite images from this trip so far, which is more down to the quality of light than anything else. I’ll post more images of craftsman in the same workshop in the days to come. It's fascinated to watch them. We’ve just arrived in Jaiselmer in time for sunset.

Unnerving monkeys everywhere. I don't know which is the best version of the image. It looked more like the first. This fort's wall is the second longest in the world after The Great Wall of China, at 36km long. Wide enough for 6 horses as well.

A bit more Holi and Jaipur before I was laid low for a day by a stomach bug so could only hear the loud festivities from my sickbed. Since then we've stayed at Bundi and returned to Bijaipur Castle after 30 years. So many photos, so little time to edit them.

The day before Holi in Rajasthan, as in most of North India, is called Holika Dahan (होलिका दहन) or Chhoti Holi (Small Holi).

The Ritual involves lighting a bonfire after sunset to symbolise the victory of good over evil (the burning of the demoness Holika while the devotee Prahlad was saved).
Local Observations: In Rajasthan, people gather around these bonfires to perform puja, sing, and dance.

The lighting of the fire happened at 1.30am and I wasn't dedicated enough to stay up. We watched women and children from Samode village performing puja and celebrating and had a walk around the village. The first photo is of a staff member of the Samode Palace Hotel, who has worked there for 35 years, so was there when Alex visited in 1992.
