James Tower was an artist that continued to explore and experiment with different mediums and medias - and the 1960s saw the artist take a new, more sculptural direction in his work.

Whilst remaining inspired by the English landscape, he turned his back on glazing and instead opted for more sculptural and architectural earthenware forms, made with unglazed white china clay. Some were most likely made with the intention of casting in bronze - a material he would have been well exposed to through contemporaries at Gimpel Fils, such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.

These powerful expressions capture the artist’s very sculptural sensibilities, and showcase his brilliant understanding of form, and the interplay between positive and negative space.
