The Nostromo Unplugged

The Nostromo Unplugged Photographs, info, constructive debate, artistic contributions always welcome.

Nostromo unplugged we wanted to bring as a "One-Stop" shop dedicated to the perpetuation of the 1979 classic ALIEN in general and the Nostromo sets at Shepperton in particular. Nostromo Unplugged is dedicated entirely to the 1979 ALIEN movie in general and the USCSS NOSTROMO sets in particular, photographs, pictures, articles, artist contributions are always welcome providing they concern ALIEN, T

here is no acknowledgement of the so-called "Franchise" or sequel of the other inferior Alien movies which we regard as "Out of Scope". The Alien monster is referred to as such, no :'Xenomorph' or 'Warrior' this is Cameron speak and it isn't spoken here thanks very much. London England is the home of ALIEN and the majority of the personnel involved in the production are British and this page subscribes to that spirit of Shepperton Studios in the Summer/Winter of 1978 where a host of talent descended and created possibly the finest sci-fi movie ever made, and we dedicate this page to all those wonderful people who gave us Alien and long may it bring more fans and continue to scare us silly in the years to come!

Dotted about the Nostromo corridors and rooms are a variety of peculiar pressure suits and helmets, giving an initial unnerving sense of being watched, primarily these costumes are located on the C' Deck sets, notably the Garage Bay and next door in the Equipment Storage Room. Near the Mess Room in the A' Deck set is an access junction between the Infirmary and Bridge sets, there is two cabinets sentinel to the ladderwell, in those cabinets you'll see a pair of pressure suits along with helmets and various emergency equipment, one of the cabinets also contains Jones the cat's Catbox!
The suits were old Soviet fighter-jet pressure suits, these elaborate suits were dressed by John Mollo showing the peculiar blood vessel and complex stitching patterns on the suits. Of note is the helmets, all of which are ex-RAF "Partial Pressure" helmets, only slightly dressed with a black "Brow" just above the visor. These 1960's helmets were made chiefly by Baxter Woodhouse and Taylor Limited and of various "Types" from A to E type. These helmets were designed for Vulcan Bomber and Lightening fighter pilots, Partially pressurised being more flexible than a fixed sealed atmospheric pressure helmet, its elaborate complex look gives it an industrial heavy-duty purpose fitted for the interior of the Nostromo. The red box below the visor is actually a facility for using "In-Flight" drinks and food, this was dressed in the movie with the label "Emergency Helmet". I have years ago seen these helmets and suits in various "Army Surplus" stores really cheaply, where nowadays you would easily hit four figures for the helmet alone! such is the rarity--only limited by the number of bombers and fighter built by the RAF--The Soviet flight suits would be almost impossible to get hold of now as most have been sold up or destroyed.
Such is the very elaborate industrial wealth of detail applied to the interior sets of the Nostromo--and at the time very cheaply purchased by the production team, impossible today!!

Having showed you the recast Ash's head used for the close up insert shot of Parker's death, I show you here the close up insert shot of The Alien about to kill Brett, where it's inner jaws punch through his hat--using the Nostromo patch as an aiming point!--being in the claw room with it's dripping "Rain" of coolant you can see the rain tapping on the hat, the logo badge appears to be a flimsy transfer than the fabric version--making it easier for the teeth to punch through, I would suggest this insert shot was created the same time as Parker's insert death shot post production.
In the "Ridley Gram" sketches Brett was to have his stomach blown out by The Alien, but this was nixed as being too similar to Kane's death earlier. Ridley Scott wanted a tight fast but clearly disturbing demise for Brett, The Alien swinging down like a spider, reaching out tentatively, Brett paralysed with shock, slowly the tail reaching between Brett's legs then the stinger pushing him into a lethal embrace with The Alien, it was filmed originally The Alien crushing Brett's head as he screamed and struggled, you see briefly a rivulet of blood running down his face as The Alien opens its jaws and kills him, the insert shot of Brett's cap was added in between those shots. Still screaming Brett collapses and The Alien still gripping his head rises up and both drift upward toward the cooling ducts above as Ripley and Parker run headlong into the chamber, seconds too late to rescue the doomed Brett. I am sure you have seen this photograph before, this was used as an insert shot when The Alien kills Parker. The FX dept used a mould cast of Ash's (Ian Holm) head, colored the top part to match Yaphet's forehead, fitting a ram-arm to The Alien's inner jaws, the head was filled with pig brains, the forehead was slightly thinner depth to enable the jaws to punch a hole into the head, the teeth had fish hooks fitted behind the open teeth to pull out the brains, the top of the head was dressed as Yaphet's hair and some drizzle applied for sweat effect. The insert shot was cut down to under a second where you can see the teeth flashing forward, catching a glimpse of one of The Alien's hands holding Parker's head in place, the teeth smash into the forehead pulling some of the brains within out. As The Alien turns it's attention to Lambert we can assume Parker died instantly and fell down to the floor next to the doorway to the equipment storage room. Later when Ripley see's the two dead crew members we see Parker seated slumped slightly forward arms out with blood running down from his head.
Originally Parker's death was simply going to be The Alien crushing Parker's head into the bulkhead, pressing his head crushing it, but it was deemed much quicker for The Alien to kill Parker with it's inner jaws. Earlier Brett's death was filmed with The Alien holding his head crushing it--you briefly see blood running down Brett's face as he screams before you see The Alien kill him with his jaws punching through Brett's baseball cap, another insert shot was used for that.

"The Impossible Build: How They Made The Alien Suit" is a 1 hour 5 minute documentary by Cinema Tyler, a mix of Giger's Alien (1979) and The Beast Within DVD extra documentary, its a good composition focusing on the politics of constructing a valid believable Alien monster, there are several outtakes of production shots of The Alien for those who have never seen them before, It makes for an entertaining lunch-break treat, you can appreciate the complexities, politics, panics, frustration of a movie type never really done before at that time, along with the limited technology back then into a very tight filming schedule which 20th Century Fox felt was a gamble. ALIEN was a constantly changing production evolving into the movie we are familiar with today which Ridley Scott fought so much to hold together in what was a very stressful studio pressured ridiculousness focused on cost than quality, luckily for us the audience Ridley Scott was able to mask all that into a classic Sci-Fi horror masterpiece. I hope you enjoy and appreciate a little more about the ALIEN movie production.

Another Parker and Lambert Alien encounter picture I dug out, I have always found this particular scene fascinating and somewhat eerie on different levels--I am not interested whenever The Alien "R***d" Lambert, she was due a few nasty demises but time and technology worked against that so I much prefer that her death--which we hear as Ripley runs through the corridors is best left to speculation--that makes it more creepy and suggestive--remember it's The Alien we are dealing with here, its what makes this creature very scary and Alien to our (and the crews) perceptions.
Parker and Lambert's death scene from the moment they say cheerio to Ripley seemed as one is watching inevitable, but how will it happen? They are both watchful, Parker is well armed with a flamethrower and attitude, Lambert is a bit wobbly but everyone taken by The Alien have been alone.....(Earlier but unseen Parker had already encountered The Alien before Ash went mental on Ripley..) So two well keyed up crew members gathering as much oxygen coolant and food should be fine....?

As Ripley preps the Shuttle for pre-launch, she hears over the ship-wide intercom a distinct "meow"--Oh F**k, yeah! Jonesy! In all this excitement I forgot!!--and she heads straight for the Bridge--no-where else, but the Bridge, maybe this is a regular spot for the cat--perhaps Ripley knows the routine before going into hypersleep--head for the bridge to grab the cat? But why did Jones "Meow"? he seemed happily contented sleeping on Kane's console chair, cats very rarely "Meow" on their own unless they are uncertain or distressed, did The Alien on its periodic wanderings around the ship see Jones in the bridge? Just an "Off Script" thought there.....
So Parker and Lambert enter the Garage Bay, filled with dark shadowy Alien hiding places, nothing happens as we hear the whine of the bottle trolley being pushed along, "Check For Bottles" says Parker as Lambert climbs aboard the VTOL craft--a little jump scene when grabbing a gas bottle Lambert accidentally sets off a valve, but everything is alright as she passes it to Parker who is keeping watch--we see his flamethrower isn't lit up--ready for instant use--How do you fire up the weapon if it is needed suddenly? would it be like clicking a cigarette lighter? clicking it furiously as you open the gas valve? How desperate would that be? (Another "Off Script" thought..) With a quick look about with the flash light both Parker and Lambert exit the Garage Bay and head across to the cramped tight Equipment Storage Room (Where earlier Jonesy was found hiding in a closet and Brett was sent off to fetch him..) There is only one way in and out of that malodorous cramped chamber and the loaded trolley with tracker and flashlight is wheeled up to the doorway.....
The Equipment Storage room is a twin-octagonal shaped room filled with a lot of equipment--mostly it seems to be spare pressure suits hung from the ceiling like cattle meat, lots of storage crates and shelves of bottled gas cylinders, the room is divided by an archway separating the chamber into two, Parker has made his way deep into the 2nd chamber surrounded by hung up pressure suits, Lambert is a few steps away from the open doorway lit up well by the flashlight on the trolley outside, she is hauling out gas bottles checking each one has full pressure and throwing them along the floor to the doorway, Parker and Lambert are making a lot of noise as we hear the bottles clanging away over the intercom as Ripley finds Jones the cat and stuffs him into the Cat Box, we then hear a new sinister weird sound occur--like a insectoid cicadia type sound, a type of pulsing hissing, we sense something is going to happen--Everyone taken by The Alien had been alone--is Ripley about to be taken?
Downstairs, things are speeding up and a sense of panic is creeping in as Parker asks Lambert "You Ok?" "Fine," replies Lambert, the insectoid hissing sound gets louder, the spotlight of light centered on Lambert is suddenly broken by Something, Something quietly making it's way past the trolley, Something wanting to see what all the noise is about, Something who is very curious...
Lambert is still pulling gas bottles from the shelves, turns to throw a bottle along the floor, maybe thinking that trolley is going to be very loaded up, how are we going to carry all that upstairs to the Shuttle craft? as she turns to get maybe a last bottle something catches her eye, something that wasn't there a moment ago, something by the doorway, we can now hear a new sound, labored breathing and a alight pulsing hissing, something really awful, something big and powerful is blocking the doorway and looking intently at Lambert, has it noticed Parker tucked away in the other chamber? Lambert stops and staring at the apparition, she emits a slight whimper of panic as we see the creature slowly rises it's head upward, tilts its head curiously, raising its tail to pin Lambert in place staring at her, is it intent or genuine curiosity? so far The Aliens victims have been male, her in front is a different type of creature--we simply don't know but momentarily The Alien c***s its head curiously, it forward crawls crab like toward Lambert tail poking forward to keep her in place, The Alien wants to find out more about her....Slowly The Alien rises up on its haunches, completely trapping Lambert in a corner...
Parker hearing the sound of clanging bottles suddenly stopping and hearing Lambert's moan looks up and with incredulous realisation the situation is really bad, how could he let his guard drop? Stuck deep in a cramped cluttered claustrophobic stuffy room, the scene before him opens out--There is The Alien, complete drifting with slow deliberation arms out reaching toward Lambert, Parker has a complete wide view of the awful scene, could he ease past The Alien out of the room? Does The Alien know he is in the chamber as well? Parker decides he could deal with The Alien if only Lambert could duck behind a crate, he could light up the flamethrower and blast The Alien before it gets any closer--why is it moving so slowly? deliberately? Infuriated Parker yells at Lambert to get out of the way, the bizarre insectoid hissing and breathing takes on a very creepy repeating chorus of utter awfulness, you can sense its going to get real bad in that room.
Ripley hearing the commotion downstairs over the intercom up on the Bridge calls out Parker and Lambert's names, seemingly unsure what is going on down there, dropping the Cat Box realising The Alien is down there doing something, Ripley runs off to give help as quick as she can....
The Alien having pressed Lambert into a corner opens its jaws displaying its teeth at Lambert, seemingly leering at her, its tail raised up behind ready to strike, The Alien's jaws swinging and dripping with slime, Lambert tries to look away with utter disgust, revolted by the nightmare cornering her, the sense of oppressive claustrophobia is overwhelming, the closeness of The Alien to Lambert is suffocating, you know something horrible is going to happen, but how or what? Parker watching all this badly needs to help Lambert and keeps telling her to move out of the way, But either she can't or she is too terrified is hard to confirm, Parker realises things are getting really desperate, they shouldn't be down here trapped in this ugly horrible chamber, they should all be on the shuttle getting the hell out of here, a sense of realisation seems to come over Parker, his determination has only one last idea, fight The Alien giving Lambert a chance to escape--where's Ripley? Why isn't she here already? two flamethrowers against this creature....Reaching upward Parker grabs a suit hanging hook determined to keep The Alien busy, dropping his flamethrower he runs up to take his chance....
With a suddenness and surprising violent velocity The Alien spins round using its tail to whip Parker solidly into a bulkhead near the doorway, stunning Parker senseless as he crashes into the wall and falls to the floor, The Alien reaches out toward Parker, perhaps it senses that help is on its way, it can't let Lambert escape as it wants to investigate her, she is unable to move--The Alien reaching for Parker is blocking the open doorway, is Lambert hoping that Ripley--wherever she is--will be coming to help anytime now, is is Lambert too frozen up in fear to think? Her survival instincts too clogged up in a mental collapse of acceptance, we will never know, we can only speculate our own perceived reactions to the same situation.
Parker is lifted and thrown hard against a bulkhead, now ejecting gas and steam from a fractured pipe, adding to the collective sense of broken down incipient doom, The Alien tried to press Parker's head into a bulkhead crevice, in terrible pain--from being whipped and thrown against a wall and now being jammed into a crevice, Parker's anger fuels his desperate fight to keep time and let Lambert escape, maybe just maybe Ripley will get here flamethrower blazing--I'm dying don't worry about me--just take me and this goddamn Alien out--Parker is wrestling and punching The Alien, finally losing his strength he calls out to Lambert desperately "Get Out Of The Room!!" The Aliens jaws slowly open, raining slime and water as Parker knows he is going to die his cries of agony stopped suddenly as the inner jaws punching into Parker's forehead. Dropping Parker's body, The Alien slowly turns its attention toward Lambert, it's blooded jaws slowly closing as it advances deliberately and slowly....
Ripley cannot make sense of the awful struggling noises echoing over the intercoms as she is running desperately to help Parker and Lambert, the corridor dark and long with lazily rotating lights adding to her confusion and fury, the trolley full of gas bottles and food irrelevant now, why did she send them both down with such a stupid idea?
As she is running she here's the last moments of Lambert's life echoing over the intercom, Ripley doesn't know that bit she wants to be there, just give me a few seconds--I'm on my way, hang in there, I'm coming. Ripley cannot make sense of whats she is hearing over the intercoms, the audience can only hear the deep heavy breathing getting quicker and quicker, a mix of grunting labored breathing clearly Alien in sound rasps out of the intercoms, what the hell is it doing to Lambert?, the breathing gets more and more rapid and speeded up until we hear a distant roar and a final pitched scream from Lambert, the painful agony finally over, the intercoms are silent, only the echoing sad pulsing of the ships machinery can be heard, a final saluting symphony to the deaths of Parker and Lambert, all is quiet. Ripley finally a few seconds later reaches the open doorway of the Equipment Storage room, a fine mist of rain and steam silently drifting about, hesitantly she slows down gets her breath and slowly looks about--more from fear of The Alien jumping out, she seems to deeply sense that both Parker and Lambert are both dead now, otherwise they would have ran into her earlier to escape, all is silent, only escaping steam and fine mist of water greets her, but Ripley has to be sure, so she standing next to the trolley looks into the room, well illuminated by the flashlight a nightmarish mess next to the doorway appears, confirming her fears. From inside looking toward the open doorway we see next to the camera a slowly swinging naked leg and foot a trail of blood running down dripping on the deck flooring, just beyond next to the doorway Parker is sitting arms open legs crossed leaned forward with his brains in his lap, The Alien's destructive power on him total and final, we assume Lambert like a butchered carcass is hanging from the central archway diving the chamber into two, the scene of raw butchery complete, with a repulsed shiver Ripley pulls back and runs blindly back up the corridor, not thinking just how could The Alien disappear so fast after that carnage in that room? I got there just as Lambert screamed her last! Where is The Alien now? I don't care--I'm going to end this nightmare now and blow up this ship!

Here we have the Nostromo monitor display matrix as seen in the background in the movie. We also see the infamous "Purge" screen and "Undocking" sequence--both used by Ridley Scott in his later Blade Runner.
The monitor screen shots are a random set of numbers and pulsating movements giving the impression of busy monitoring computer busyness which i like. in one of the screen shots you'll notice David Giler's name added to the matrix screen, ALIEN has numerous monitor sequences with various production team names included, a common cinematic tribute.
These monitor sequences can be seen in the Blu-ray ALIEN quad disk set within the "Extra Option" section and interesting to see the typical background detail barely seen in the movie. these sequences would have been looped through the set monitors using a series of video players and basic computer matrix patterns--some of which were not always genuine computer displays--remember this was 1978, on the absolute cusp of home computing. But the Nostromo's Solid State graphics reinforces a sound solid somewhat comforting display--when watching the movie again keep an eye out for the variety of computer displays in the background monitors!

Flashlights, there are plenty of them on board the Nostromo, chiefly for emergency purposes. in the movie there were four different styles of flashlights used by the crew.
The most familiar are the ones we see in the bridge set, coming in two styles--a set between Lambert and Kane, and a few bolted to the ceiling of the bridge, a long triangular version, both styles are coloured bright red and mains powered. The props dept developed the flashlights based on diving lights--the normal submerged conditions keeping the filament cool, so a lower wattage filament was used during production, the main body of the flashlight was purpose made molded resin. These hand held flash lights we see used after the Nostromo landed, Lambert and Parker tracking Dallas in the garage bay, and later when Lambert and Parker visit the garage bay again to pick up oxygen gas bottles before the Alien ambushes them, the flashlight is wired to a battery and sitting on Lambert's trolley.
Another type of flashlight we see are the ones carried by Kane as he explores the egg cavern, and later Dallas uses in the airshafts pursuing The Alien, this flashlight has a box-type appearance with a fitted handle at the rear and is portable non-mains.
Finally the other style of flashlight is the one we see Ripley use just before she, Parker & Brett find the cat inside a locker in the storage room. The flashlight is a long-handled version with a grille fitted over the light filament. The photos shown are the red coloured familiar powered flashlights we see in the bridge set.

Two characters noticeably wear digital watches on board the Nostromo, a seemingly twinned timepiece (one can safely assume one is for ship time, the other for destination-Earth-time, or they just simply looked "futuristic") worn by Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) and Warrant Officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). Dallas's watch can be seen clearly when discussing the Airshaft debate in the mess room after Brett's death.
The watches worn in the movie was a Casio-F100 digital watch, a basic timepiece released by Casio in 1977. The effects workshop simply bought 4 of these watches, twinned them--one for Dallas and the other for Ripley--they were then set in a red backing bed with original vinyl wrist strapping. Back then in 1978 they would have costed £10-12 from any local jewellers.
The Casio F100 was the first digital watch to be made entirely of resin making them cheap to manufacture and much lighter than the standard chrome style prevalent back then. remade copies of the Casio F100 can be bought on Amazon usually selling for around £50, original F100 resin watches will catch a price of £200-£300 due to its link with ALIEN.
It appears no other crew member wear these watches, so we can assume only two sets were made.

Some detailed shots here of the landing legs of the Nostromo. The ship had a set of three, one under each nacelle and one forward just behind the bow section. From being stored within the hull, the legs would descend and rotate and fix at right angles to the ships hull upon landing. Later one set of landing legs would be used by The Alien for its lair where Dallas and Brett were cocooned.
Again the wealth of detail to the scale model landing legs and studio scale set is remarkable. the studio landing legs were built to a slight reduced size to allow suited child actors to exaggerate the size in perspective shots, an old cinematic optical trick.

Some scale model shots of the Nostromo, as used in the movie-in particular the landing sequences, the wealth of detail is amazing and an example of the rich texture we see throughout the movie. Brian Johnson had to visit the production studios at Shepperton to grab some Ron Cobb sketches and studio set plans to enable his team to create the Nostromo models. The models underwent several changes and colour schemes to match Ridley's vision, several hundred scale model kits were used to build and texture the Nostromo, chiefly model kits of tanks and the Space Shuttle along with even Star Wars droids being used! The main larger scale Nostromo model along with the Refinery model were crated up and sent onto Los Angeles and displayed at The Egyptian Theater, after which they were sent on to model collector Bob Burns home for a whimsical Halloween party display, after a number of years languishing outdoors, the larger models were given to the Hollywood Prop Store to be repaired and reconstructed for their own display, later the large Nostromo model was sold onward to a collector.
The large Bow section we can see was intensely detailed and fitted with a TV monitor for internal movement of the actors in the bridge set for a special effect and emphasise the size of the ship, the bow section seen here is still awaiting more detail to be added.
