I try to blend into the background when I take photos so I can take candid shots, but sometimes I enjoy the cheap thrill of being caught and having to get out of the situation.

In this case I deployed the “it’s the background not you” technique, where I pretend to be unnaturally interested in the scene behind the subject.

Sometimes when I’m wandering around the Tube, I look around to see who could save me if I get into trouble. Who are the secret heroes in plain clothing who will snap into action to administer CPR, or punch a N**i, or just yell out to me so I don’t accidentally fall onto the tracks.

Generally speaking, the trench coat wearers of the world always rank highly in this stupid mental exercise.

Another Chef, Another Doorway - Oxford Circus, London.⁣

This photo was memorable because of how disbelieving the chef was that I wanted to take her photo.⁣
⁣
“Why me? What’s so interesting about me?”⁣
⁣
The reason was simple and the same for anyone whose photo I want to take. Their mere presence tells a story about the environments I walk through everyday. They are characters who give the city life and verisimilitude.⁣
⁣

Reflections & Lululemons - London Bridge, London.

When I’m out taking photos, I’m always surprised by the athletic people I see running around town at 7am in the morning. I can barely walk and press a camera shutter that early in the day, let alone traverse the city.

Old Phone, New Phone - Mayfair, London.

The iconic red telephone boxes were first introduced back in 1926 and weighed over a tonne. The telephone box in the picture is the K6 - or Kiosk 6 - design, which became the norm a decade later.

Nowadays, with smartphones in almost every pocket, the red telephone box’s primary purpose is as a prop in Instagram photos.

Vigil - NZ War Memorial, London.

Just heading back home from the moving vigil held for the victims.

It felt very . Small, filled with loving people, and just a little bit dinky (they almost forgot the moment of silence until someone in the crowd suggested it).

When the crowd started singing Pokarekare Ana you can bet I bawled my eyes out. I’m glad I went so I can show my Muslim family back home in the outpouring of support from London.
