🌊The most overfished sea in the world 🌊

Overfishing and extinction of fish species are widespread in the . With 86% of its population overexploited, this biodiversity hotspot is the most overfished sea in the world. 🌎

👉 This crisis is a result of decades of illegal fishing, increased fleet capacity, and by-catches of unwanted species.

Sea Shepherd has been on the frontlines to combat and in the Mediterranean for several years. Most recently, our crew on removed hundreds of kilometers of fishing lines from Italian waters, while in Greece, our Campaign assisted local authorities in apprehending an illegally fishing vessel in Europe’s biggest marine protected area.

Pterois volitans (Lionfish) // Ionian Sea, 2021.

This beautiful species is particularly destructive in the Mediterranean and Ionian, where it competes with overfished native species such as snapper and grouper. Lionfish have very few natural predators and an incredibly high birth rate making them one of the most successful invasive marine species on the planet.

Lionfish // Ionian Sea.

Lionfish are native to the Indo-Pacific, but with very few natural predators and a very high birth rate (2 MILLION eggs per year), they have become a catastrophically successful invasive species in several other oceans and seas.

They were first seen in the Med in 1991, apparently having entered via the Suez Canal from the Red Sea and have since made their way into the Ionian Sea.

You can find lots of information on the work being done to study and rebalance the ecosystem in Kefalonia on the website.
