Pura Vida in Costa Rica
Earlier in the year we went to Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Pura Vida, or ‘Pure Life’, is their philosophy for living – and it works.
It was a great place for wildlife, but maybe not so good for modern architecture. I took a lot of, not very good, photographs of sloths! – but on our last day in the capital, San Jose, I discovered the Legislative Assembly Building which had this very powerful feature at its entrance.

£100,000,000 Penthouse?
Yes that is the right number of noughts.
The Times ran an article recently asking if this was the first £100 million apartment in London; it’s the penthouse at the Raffles Hotel London building. The hotel shares its home in the Old War Office with ‘The Residences’ luxury apartments. This is the largest of them.
So if you happen to find yourself with a spare £100M, I believe it’s still for sale.

Borobudur
In May this year we went to Indonesia for the first time, spending most of our time in Java. One of the most remarkable places that we visited was Borobudur in Magelang; it’s the largest Buddhist temple complex in the world, dating back to the 9th century, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each of the bell-like structures is a stupa containing a statue of the Buddha.
Breathtaking!

High Fashion
I was in Milan last week; this is the beautiful Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, just to the side of the Duomo square. It’s a shopping arcade stuffed with the likes of Prada, Fendi, Louis Vuitton etc.– somehow they just don’t seem to be participating in the cost of living crisis.
My big purchase was two cups of cappuccino.

Raffles Hotel - Old War Office
After more than three years - and very many visits to Whitehall, I finally got my Hero shot of the main staircase.

Sad to hear that Sir Michael Hopkins has just died - truly one of the Greats of British Architecture, and responsible for so many of our most significant buildings.
I was fortunate to meet him and to take his portrait at his house/studio in Hampstead back in the seventies. Over the decades I photographed many of his buildings.

The DDP
This is the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, designed by the great architect Zaha Hadid. I was visiting my son who lives there a few weeks ago and this was on his checklist of buildings that he thought I’d probably like to photograph. He was right.

Raffles
Back in September 2019 I posted a few pictures from my first visit, for a client, to the Old War Office construction site in Whitehall which is to become a new Raffles Hotel and a number of luxury apartments. More than 3 years later, I’m still making visits to record site progress and it’s now into the home stretch. The Raffles Hotel is on schedule to open this summer and if you have a few million quid going spare, you might still be able to pick up a nice apartment.
Here are a few shots from my visit last week.

Marrakech
A few weeks ago I was in Morocco; it was a good trip, but I wasn’t really expecting to see great new architecture, it wasn’t that kind of trip – how wrong I was. This is a detail of the stunning airport at Marrakech by E2A Architects.

Musings on longevity
On a recent visit to the City of London, I was somewhat surprised to see a large hole in the ground where once stood a building that I had photographed, while it was under construction, about thirty years ago. This image shows an elevation of the new marketing building for the buildings to come.
Less than a mile away, and still standing, is the Tower of London – nearly one thousand years old.
