“We just arrived at the Keoladeo Ghana National Park, which hosts thousands of native, resident and migratory birds. It was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971 and due to its exceptional avian biodiversity, it is UNESCO site since 1985. The park also features an artificial wetland as a source of hydration for any animals in this drier region and it protects from flash floods and provides ample pastures for the locals' cattle and livestock, as we can see now. We came for the birds but we like to photograph the cattle too”.
Given its rather centralized location, where the desert meets the tropics, the park is bursting with biodiversity. Beyond hundreds of bird species, at least 20 fish, 70 reptile and amphibian, 50 mammalian and over 60 unique species of Lepidopterans have been seen here, in addition to the more than 1,000 invertebrate species. About 400 plant species have been documented in the park.

“This henna (mehndi in the Hindi language) decorated hands belong to a bride that is doing a photo shooting in the Lodhi Garden” – says , our National Geographic – “tomorrow she is going to marry and she is collecting photographs for her future husband and the family”.
“She is in a state of grace. The henna decoration shows the intense love she is going through” – continues Massimo – “her happiness is contagious and she cannot stop smile. With all respect I went closer and asked her to photograph her hands that the women of the family have painted with the henna. She did not just give me the permission to photograph but welcomed me to do so and, after I finished my shooting, she said she was honored and she thanks me”. Unbelievable Indians.

“Jaisalmer is out of the usual itineraries here in Rajasthan. We arrived here by train, the only one that make this stop. Named the Palace on Wheels, it is the first train that brings tourists to discover India since 1982”.
“Jaisalmer Fort is a UNESCO heritage site and it is famous for its seven Jain Temples inside the fortification. We are visiting the most famous in the people devotion, the Chandraprabhu Jain Temple, built in the 16th century. It is one that were constructed for the 8th Tirthankara Jain Prophet Chandraprabhu Ji. Inside there are many statues in different sizes but all are beautifully carved like this Idol of Chandraprabhu, a savior and spiritual teacher of Jainism. Visiting Jaisalmer is one of the many highlights of this expedition in India, made slowly by the comfort of the rail”.

“My fantastic expedition in India concludes facing the Taj Mahal, one of the seventh wonders of the antiquity and for sure the most visited monument of India and the entire Asia, and it is from the end that I’d like to start my visual story about this expedition. I came here over two dozen of times in my life and I’ve never seen without a scaffolding somewhere. It was always under restoration and maintenance. Eternal. So, I’m now enjoying as I’ve never seen before. The most amazing view I could dream. So clean, gorgeous!”.
The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum commissioned in 1631 by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (r. 1628–1658) to house the tomb of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died on 17 June that year, while giving birth to their 14th child. Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643, but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The first ceremony held at the mausoleum was an observance by Shah Jahan, on 6 February 1643, of the 12th anniversary of the death of Mumtaz Mahal. The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the emperor's court architect. Various types of symbolism have been employed in the Taj to reflect natural beauty and divinity.
The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 for being "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage".

“The best way to explore the temple of Luxor, it’s to come at night. It is one of the largest Egyptian temples located on the east bank of the Nile River in the ancient city of Thebes, today named Luxor. It was constructed around the 1400 BCE and it’s still impressive as it was in the antiquity. At night the temple has a completely different atmosphere. Even if it is crowd, we cannot really see the number of visitors in the dark, but just the temple, the sculptures, columns and more details that are lighted up. It really looks like to be alone to explore the site. And for a photographer, the light always adds something magic. Truly magic”.

Il modo migliore per esplorare il tempio di Luxor è ve**re di notte. È uno dei più grandi templi egizi situato sulla sponda orientale del fiume Nilo nell'antica città di Tebe, oggi chiamato Luxor. Fu costruito intorno al 1400 a.C. ed è ancora impressionante come lo era nell’antichità. Di notte il tempio ha un’atmosfera completamente diversa. Anche se è pieno di gente, al buio non riusciamo a vedere il numero dei visitatori, ma solo il tempio, le sculture, le colonne e altri dettagli che sono illuminati . Sembra davvero di essere da soli ad esplorare il sito. E per un fotografo la luce aggiunge sempre qualcosa di magico. Assolutamente magico”.

At a certain point we find ourselves face to face with silence and an unreal scenario that takes us back in time, into the thousand-year history of this place. A 4500-year-old moment of pure romance. On the horizon the pyramid of Menkaure and the smaller pyramids of the Queens. A man and his dromedary on a pilgrimage to pay homage to the deceased Pharaoh. In the distance a knight on horseback, guarding Menkaure's treasure. The one that guarantees him the continuity of life in the afterlife. It's a magical moment. We don't say words and we enjoy the silence. Who knows what my traveling companions are thinking. Maybe they too, like me, have gone back in time. It's their first time here. For me it's as if it were. I never count the returns to Egypt. Every time I get as excited as I did 41 years ago, when I landed here for the first time, in front of the pyramids. As a young man I was in disbelief. Everything I had studied at school about the pyramids and the pharaohs had not prepared me for this magnificence. That's when I started to love history in the field. Maybe that's where the explorer's germ crept into me and, even now, it hasn't abandoned me. Thank you very much, Egypt, for all this.

Ad un certo punto ci troviamo a tu per tu col silenzio e uno scenario irreale che ci porta indietro nel tempo, nella storia millenaria di questo luogo. Un momento di puro romanticismo vecchio di 4500 anni. All’orizzonte la piramide di Micerino e le più piccole piramidi delle Regine. Il cammelliere e il dromedario in pellegrinaggio per rendere omaggio al defunto faraone. In lontananza un cavaliere a cavallo, a guardia del tesoro di Micerino. Quello che gli garantisce la continuità della vita nell’aldilà. È un momento magico. Non proferiamo parole e ci godiamo il silenzio. Chissà cosa staranno pensando i miei compagni di viaggio. Forse anche loro, come me, sono tornati indietro nel tempo. Per loro è la prima volta qui. Per me è come se lo fosse. Non conto mai i ritorni in Egitto. Ogni volta mi emoziono come 41 anni fa, quando approdai qui per la prima volta, al cospetto delle piramidi. Come giovane uomo ero incredulo. Tutto quello che avevo studiato a scuola sulle piramidi e i faraoni, non mi aveva preparato a questa magnificenza. In quel momento ho iniziato ad amare la storia sul campo. Forse è lì che il germe dell’esploratore si è insinuato in me e, ancora adesso, non mi ha abbandonato. Grazie di cuore, Egitto, per tutto questo.

Visiting the Giza Complex in Cairo with its three most famous pyramids and the Great Sphinx, it’s a fantastic introduction to this wonderful history of the planet. It is not for nothing that this expedition is entitled Ancient Wonders of the legendary Nile. I don’t know how many times I’ve been here, but everyday is like my first one. I stop and watch. Who built this? How? How magnificent was these people to create such symbol of power, culture, tradition. It’s very impressive. I love to come in Egypt and every time I learn something new thanks the continuous research and excavation.
A typical Egyptian carriage is looking for tourists around the magnificent Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops).

“Visitare il Complesso di Giza al Cairo, con le sue tre piramidi e la Sfinge, è un’ottima introduzione a questa meravigliosa storia del pianeta. Non per niente questa spedizione si intitola Antiche Meraviglie del leggendario Nilo. Non so quante volte sono stato qui, ma ogni giorno è come se fosse il primo. Mi fermo e guardo. Chi ha costruito questo? Come? Quanto questo popolo sia stato magnifico nel creare un tale simbolo di potere, cultura, tradizione. Davvero impressionante. Adoro ve**re in Egitto e ogni volta imparo qualcosa di nuovo grazie ai continui scavi e agli archeologi coinvolti che vengono da tutto il mondo. La storia egiziana è una calamita!!

As sunset approaches, the unmistakable silhouette of NGEndurance stands out on the horizon. Along the Beagle Channel, there are those who go and there are those who return. We return from Antarctica as NG Endurance heads towards the Drake Passage. Sunset comes late in Patagonia, and the color of the sky changes slowly. It turns yellow, then orange, red, finally dark blue. On board the excitement will be at its peak. Those who go south can't wait to see Antarctica on the horizon. Those who go back, like us, already have longings for icebergs, ice, penguins, whales, seals. Not to mention the multitude of birds that fly across the sky all day. Never has a silhouette been so promising of emotions. Happy sailing, dear friends.

Con l’avvicinarsi del tramonto, la sagoma inconfondibile di NGEndurance si staglia all’orizzonte. Lungo il Canale di Beagle c'è chi va e c'è chi torna. Ritorniamo dall'Antartide mentre NG Endurance si dirige verso il Passaggio di Drake. Il tramonto arriva tardi in Patagonia e il colore del cielo cambia lentamente. Diventa giallo, poi arancione, rosso, infine blu scuro. A bordo l'emozione sarà al massimo. Chi va a sud non vede l'ora di vedere l'Antartide all'orizzonte. Chi torna indietro, come noi, ha già nostalgia degli iceberg, del ghiaccio, dei pinguini, balene, foche. Per non parlare della moltitudine di uccelli che volano nel cielo tutto il giorno. Mai una silhouette è stata così promettente di emozioni. Buona navigazione, cari amici.

"Non c'è modo migliore di celebrare la Giornata Mondiale della fotografia preparando i bagagli per la mia prossima avventura, una spedizione fotografica nel paradiso degli animali...la Tanzania e i suoi parchi nazionali: il Lago Manyara, l'esclusivo Ngorongoro e il magico Serengeti. Sto guardando alle fotografie fatte in precedenza, sognando di ippopotami, leoni, giraffe, elefanti, ghepardi, zebra, e ancora di più. Un sorriso perenne mi è stampato in faccia al pensiero di questo Paradiso in Terra".
