Happy National Fox Day!

Couldn’t catch this day and not posted something. I will make it a mission to post more photos again, I have tons which never get seen, so be prepared for more fox content!

One of this year’s cubs, Marley. He’s gone missing recently so I think (and hope) he is the first dispersal of the season.

This may be the cutest thing I’ve ever photographed.

It’s that time of year again! The cubs have emerged. And there’s a twist! Both females have had litters and it looks like there are a fair few in each. Usually in most cases only the dominant vixen breeds in fox groups. Let’s see how they work it out to raise them all.

Hope you’re all getting some family love this Christmas!

In reality Esther is showing submissive greetings to another fox just off shot. But it still made me smile.

They’re suddenly not cubs anymore!

Young foxes are reaching maturity, and although they still have that playful young edge, they look more like their adult family members. Only slightly less fluff gives it away now!

Early evenings drawing in.

The day get shorter, and the window for fox photos grows very small. I only have maybe an hour from when they turn up to it being too dark (if they turn up at all). But it does make for some lovely light.

Enjoying the last of the warm days.

It’s the ‘October Crazies’ time for the foxes as the autumn weather hits and hormones start to make them all get very unpredictable. Apparently it’s the shorter daylight hours that kick start this process, irregardless of the temperature.

Breathing in that autumn air.

Dispersal season is beginning for the foxes, the young cubs in particular hit maturity and their hormones kick in. Relationships in the group can change very quickly in this time and siblings and offspring can go from best friends to mortal enemies in a matter of days. We have two young boys this year so the relationship between them and also their father will be interesting to watch. So far so calm.

Little Simon (yes I’ve called a fox Simon 😂 his siblings are Alvin and Theodore if anyone can spot my theme this year!) and he is super cute and an excellent poser.

The cubs are 10 weeks old and have reached the stage where they are moving further from the den, some sleeping above ground and generally becoming more independent in their surroundings. An adult is usually nearby but they also now come out of their own accord. It also means their senses are now keener and they can spot me much easier. So finding them and photographing them is much harder! Because they are already used to me sitting on the floor with the camera they put up with that, but if I move or am standing up, they’re gone! The worst is when I’m sitting in one spot and then hear them in another, trying to reposition myself without being spotted.

Two brothers.

The cubs are starting to move around the area more - and have split their time between the den in the lane where they were born and the previously used one in the garden. They still play together but they seem to be sleeping mostly in a 2 and 1 arrangement. Mum no longer goes underground with them.
