Well, what a milestone.

My old boss Bob Dylan is 85 today.

Scientists tell us the planet is approximately 4.54 billion years old, which technically means my first meeting Bob in 1978 was quicker than the blink of an eye in Earth terms.

Unfortunately, in Danny Clifford terms, it feels like quite a long time ago.

And now Bob is 85.

What makes this even more extraordinary is that he is still touring and performing constantly. Honestly, how does he do it? Ci******es, boxing training, genius, stubbornness or pure Bob Dylan magic? Probably all four.

I’ve just written a brand-new Substack piece about my time touring America with Bob in 1978 as his photographer — including New York, Greenwich Village, Bob’s wicked sense of humour, and the time I became his “decoy Dylan.”

Yes… really.

Richard Wright – Pink Floyd
Hyde Park, London • 15 June 1974

I was 16 when I took this, 52 years ago!

Somehow, I’d managed to get myself backstage at Hyde Park, surrounded by some of the greatest artists of the time. Pink Floyd were right in that moment where everything they touched turned to gold.

Rick Wright was never the obvious frontman — but he was the sound. The atmosphere. The emotion.
Take him out of Pink Floyd… and it all changes.

He was always incredibly kind to me, and without question one of the most underrated musicians I ever photographed.

I took this portrait of Richard, backstage during the afternoon on that beautifully sunny day.

A year later, I’d be working with the band properly.

Before I toured with Bob Dylan in late 1978, Bob performed at an enormous outdoor concert called ‘the Picnic at Blackbushe’, in the UK. This was the summer of 1978, and the attendance was rumoured to be between 2 to 3 hundred thousand. Amongst the other performers on the day were Eric Clapton, Graham Parker and Joan Armatrading. I happened to be there shooting it for a newspaper in the UK. I had not slept a wink for two days on the day of the gig. I was wandering around backstage and I stopped Joan and asked politely if I could take her photograph. She was very sweet and helpful. This is one of the portraits I took of her that day. I have worked a little bit with her over the years, but, only a tiny bit. I think the last time was at Blenheim Palace about 15 or 20 years ago. Anyway, she was quite lovely to photograph and she was very nice to me, which to me is important. It was a few months after this that I was actually hired by Bob Dylan and I flew off to the USA for the first time and joined the Bob Dylan tour for the first time. I was 19 or just 20 years old at the time. That is kind of crazy when I think about it. I hope Joan is doing well these days. After all, she is rather brilliant.

I first met Zak Starkey early in 1978. My friend, Keith Moon came running into my office, which was really his office, and grabbed me. He said I have got Zak downstairs, get your camera and come down. I wandered downstairs to Bob Henrits drum shop below our office in Wardour St, Soho, London. There was Keith & Zak, who was 12 years old. I was 19. We have been friends ever since. He is such a lovely guy and an incredible drummer (and guitarist). He has a one man show in NY on 20th of Feb. It’s at the Gramercy Theatre NYC. Get your tickets now. It’s going to be a real insight into his incredible life. This will be quite a special occasion. I took this photo of Zak at The Crooked Billet, Stoke Row, Henely-on Thames, UK. He was playing with the another friend of mine, Dave ‘Bucket’ Colwell. Bucket is an amazing guitarist and with their band, they played a selection of Mott the Hopple songs. They did two sold out shows and I have to say, the show was brilliant. As is the venue, which is utterly amazing. Gramercy

On Thursday evening, I drove over to The Crooked Billet in Stoke Row, near Henley on Thames.
