F**k Yu* came about when I went on holiday to Thailand and it felt like every other person was wearing one of my photos of Heidi giving me the finger. That’s when I realised the image had taken on a life of its own. My gallerist in Paris suggested I do an entire book of people doing it. PLUS I love a good name and what is better than F**k YOU Rankin. Sooooo I went back into my archive to see how many people had given me the proverbial and surprisingly (or maybe unsurprisingly) there were a lot of them. There’s something amazing about flicking through this book and seeing them all there. Telling me where to go.

I photographed for back in 1995. Like most people, my perception of him had been built through images and interviews: aloof, distant, and impossibly cool.

Then he walked into the room and was like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh: bouncy, excited, and full of energy. He couldn’t have been further from my preconception. That moment completely changed the way I approach portraiture. Since then, I’ve never wanted to preconceive portraits too tightly or trust the version of someone created by the media before meeting them. There’s something special about that off-the-cuff connection, the unexpected moment when a real person appears in front of the camera.

“Genius” is a term that gets thrown around around a little too easily, but Bowie was a genius. What struck me most wasn’t just his work, but the way he moved through the world. Curious, unpredictable, and completely alive to possibility.

My two photographs of David Bowie are now exhibiting as part of a group show at in Loulé, Portugal until 11th July.
