Photography helps me understand how I see the world; as a designer, it also helps me hold on to my sense of awe and wonder at everything I see, whether old, new, natural, man-made, static or in motion. While there are certain subjects I find myself continually drawn toward — architecture, the scale of nature, normally crowded spaces devoid of people — what I enjoy most about photography is that I

Workshop News!

July 20, 2024, Vienna 🇦🇹

Join me and my good friend Jahan Saber for our next Introduction to Large Format Photography workshop.

We only host these a few times a year, and our last sessions in Brighton and Miami sold out in a few days.

Spend a day with us in one of Europe's most beautiful cities, learning the art of large format photography. You'll get hands-on experience with 4×5” and 8x10” cameras, and we'll cover everything from loading film to composition, focusing, exposure, and more.

This workshop is perfect for all experience levels, even if you've never shot film before.

MAGICAL AFRICA

February 23 – March 5, 2024

https://www.theimageofafrica.com/dan-rubin-photography-workshop/

Traveling somewhere for the first time is special — one of my favourite travel experiences is discovering the people, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and personality of a place I've never been.

This 12-day tour in Northern Tanzania — starting in Dar es Salaam and winding through the country by land and air — will be the first time I share *my* first experience of a place in this way.

Full details on the itinerary I've created with the wonderful people at The Image of Africa Ltd are at the link above — keep an eye on Instagram for some live Q&A sessions, too.

This is an all-inclusive tour, limited to just 8 people — I expect this to sell out quickly, so if you're interested in joining this truly once-in-a-lifetime trip, check out the details and secure your place — I'd love to have you along ❤️

When Blurb Books invited me to share my process for creating a photo book, I was excited — not only for the chance to work with Blurb again (they were an integral part of producing my first proper photo book, Koya Bound, a few years ago), but also because I immediately knew what source material I would use: my recent return visit to what has quickly become one of my favorite places in the world, Sri Lanka.

Insight into the process of creating the book coming soon on Blurb’s blog — for now, you can buy the book itself (and preview the first 15 pages), directly from Blurb:

The Tokyo print I donated to Attaché's Kickstarter was incredibly popular (all 100 rewards sold out quickly) so I've asked the lovely experts at Bayeux in London to produce a few hand-printed, traditional silver gelatin darkroom prints shipping worldwide in time for Christmas.

Sizes and pricing (plus shipping):

+ 9.5 x 12" (24 x 30.5cm) — $200
+ 12 x 16" (30.5 x 40.6cm) — $300
+ 16 x 20" (40.6 x 50.8cm) — $400

Each print will be made to order, by hand, in the darkroom, and individually dodged and burned — no two prints will be alike, though all will be based on the master print seen here.

I will be processing orders manually as shipping needs to be calculated by Bayeux for each destination, so email [email protected] to place an order.

Orders must be placed by 11:59pm PST this Friday, December 8th (the sooner, the better, in order to schedule printing and calculate shipping costs, as well as to ensure shipping in time for pre-Christmas delivery).

The nice folks over at Polaroid Originals (specifically, Amy) just published a little interview with yours truly about my history with instant film, the recent workshops I taught at The Photographers' Gallery, and some of the exiting projects I'm in the middle of. Take a few minutes and give it a read…
