International Women’s Day

The story behind this picture of Michelle Walmsley and her granddaughter. St. Peter’s Square. Manchester April 2023

“My granddaughter and I were on a day out to read some storybooks in the library. I always blow Emmeline Pankhurst (bronze by Hazel Reeves) a kiss when passing, in recognition of the Suffragettes’ heroic and ultimately successful struggle to enfranchise women, a landmark victory for First Wave Feminists. The Suffragettes are important to me because I discovered Feminism in the 70’s & was a ‘Girls Worker’ across Manchester in the 80s & 90s in the Youth Service, widening opportunities for girls & young women in leisure, sport & education. We were the first group to meet in the newly opened Pankhurst Centre in Manchester, HQ to the National Organisation of Workers (NOW) of which I was vice chair.

It seems to be the fate of each era of women to have to rediscover trailblazing women who came before us. Thank you for capturing this lovely moment of introduction with my darling granddaughter. “

Michelle’s words and the picture mean a great deal to me.

PIL at The Forum, Kentish Town 27th December 2025

John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten of the S*x Pistols, was the orginal face of PUNK in 1977. The band only ever made one album but it was ground-breaking and untouchable for impact.

Lydon went on to form Public Image Ltd (PIL) who produced some classic tunes. They are now looked after by Creation Records who signed Oasis. The way Liam Gallagher sings ‘Sun Shiiiiiiiyine’ comes lock stock and barrel from Rotten. Lydon retains the charismatic persona he invented in 1976 serving it up for a new audience in 2025, both young and old.

Noel Gallagher and David Gilmour, 27th November 2025 in Soho at a Dolby playback of Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The two guitar maestros are admirers of each other’s music and have met on several occasions. They both regularly record in Abbey Road Studios.

There is nothing about Richard Ashcroft that I don't love. Oasis couldn't have chosen a stronger artist to accompany them on their recent tour. There was something magical about hearing the musician who inspired Noel's song, Cast No Shadow, performing so powerfully at all the shows. To my delight I was invited to shoot his set at Wembley Stadium on 25th July from the stage and had an incredible view of the audience singing every line of the divine Bitter Sweet Symphony.

Over the years I've photographed Richard on a few occasions. The first time at Glastonbury in 1993 when he was still in the Verve, the second time supporting Oasis in New York in March 1996 when he played a mesmerising solo accoustic set. We then met by chance as tourists in Milan in 2000 and I accompanied him, his wife and baby son on a visit to the 'Duomo Cathedral'. I photographed him lit only by the light of hundreds of candles. The fire from several can be seen in his dark glasses.

As I write, Richard and his superb band are mid-gig at Co-Op Live in Manchester. Wish I was there! A few days later he will rejoin Oasis on the road in Argentina, Chile and Brazil where he has an impressive following of his own. Sadly I won't be at those either, but can't wait to see him on tour next year. One of the greats at his peak.

Thrilled to see .one.art use Jill’s image of Liam and Noel from the Wonderwall session to create this amazing mural on the side of Sifters. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the song being released. What a tribute!

Oasis reunion tour Wembley Stadium 25th July 2025

I’ve only shot one show on the reunion tour. A talented bunch of young photographers and videographers have taken over with brilliant results. I applaud them with every social media post they release.

However, I do still love to shoot so it was still a great privilege to be able to photograph Oasis at their first Wembley gig on 25th July. My main observation on the night was that Liam has become reliable and dependable without losing any of his edgy presence. His heart rendering delivery of the greatest song book since the Beatles, flows like molten lava over ecstatic audiences in the UK and beyond. That solid commitment to make it happen every night has given Noel the luxury of relaxing and really enjoying himself, which is what he does naturally as a person. Having Bonehead back in the band (now enshrined with Gem and Andy as the Three Musketeers) has further boosted the fun that characterised the early days. Not forgetting Joey and Christian, but I was too short to see the drums or keyboards on my night of shooting!

For us fans, seeing the once warring brothers walk on stage hands held aloft, and then hug or have a moment of playfulness at the end can only be described in one word ‘Biblical’.

A big thank you to the folks a MPB who loaned me a few fast lenses for this assignment. MPB sell secondhand photo equipment - a form of recycling that is brilliant for students and professional alike. And no they don’t sponsor me, well not yet!

It was a meeting of old friends as much as a book launch, and strangely, it was as much about Pink Floyd as Oasis.

I’m talking about the launch for my Thames & Hudson book, ‘Trying To Find A Way Out Of Nowhere’ which is now for sale in shops, online and through a link in my bio.

Although Oasis mainly recorded in Studio 2, the launch took place in Studio 3, which is where Liam recorded his first solo album and Pink Floyd recorded Wish Your were Here 50 years ago. Gem Archer was there representing Oasis - the rest of the band were overcoming jet-lag after returning from Mexico. It was a joy to have him there. Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Nick Mason came just to support their old friend, and reminded me that 50 years ago they were recording ‘Wish You Were Here’ in that very studio and I was photographing them! Noel is a major Floyd fan so it somehow seemed appropriate to have them there.

One of the highlights was a Q&A with the original Creation Records press officer, and contributor to my book, Johnny Hopkins. Together we reminisced about working with Oasis during their extraordinary comet riding days. At the end we brought on stage ex-Record Mirror journalist, Daniela Soave. It was she who introduced me to not only the mighty Oasis in 1994, but also to Jeff Buckley a year earlier, so a major talent spotting pair of ears.

A shout out to all at Thames & Hudson, Sonny Marr and the team at Abbey Road for their touching and appreciated support of my work.

I was lucky enough to be on the European part of the David Gilmour Luck & Strange tour last year. I’m pretty sure all nine musicians, crew and audiences, would agree that the music was utterly sublime as was the light show directed by legendary Floyd lighting man, Mark Brickman.

David said he feels the album is up there with the best music he has ever written and recorded, including the Pink Floyd catalogue. High praise indeed.

Last week a full length concert film ‘David Gilmour, Live at the Circus Maximus, Rome’ was premiered at the IMAX cinema in London. We were all blown away. It’s your turn next week. On the 17th September it will be shown in certain cinemas world wide. If it’s showing locally don’t miss it.
