Get the full picture: Tips for choosing a photographer
Couple portraits form the centre piece of all wedding images and it’s hard to argue against why they form a major part in the decision making process when choosing a wedding photographer. However, before you make that decision here’s something to consider.
Weddings are made up of other aspects of the day – the ceremony, reception, décor details, the party, images of guests, first dance and so on. These moments happen in a blink, aren’t structured and often happen in varying surroundings and conditions. When considering a wedding photographer, think about if they’re able to capture these moments as well as they do their couple portraits.
When reviewing prospective photographers work remember you’ll be seeing the best of their best; what you want to see is consistency beyond couple portraits. Ask to see at least 3-4 complete albums (online or physical). Consider if their work captures the story, moments and emotions of the day – are they similar to what you’d like for your day?
Couple portraits are often planned, done in isolation and away from guests and other possible happenings – all other images tend to be the opposite and captured in the thick of the moment. When thinking about a wedding photographer consider are they able to offer consistent images in both circumstances.
You’ve spent months planning, arranging, coordinating and considering the fine details. Your wedding images (and video) will be the only physical record of all your hard work – and spend. You’d want it be captured accordingly.
In short; a wedding photographer’s ability to capture great couple portraits will always be key in deciding; just bear in mind if their work is consistent throughout the day and does it reflect your own vision. A good way to answer this is by seeing several complete wedding albums, not just select highlights or couple portraits.
