From my garden this morning. It feel like Autumn is well and truly on the way, chilly this morning. However the garden is still bursting with colour and lots of flowers still coming through and the sun is shining, happy.

I planted 2 crops of sunflowers this year. The first crop were maturing so quickly because of our really warm May. Though they were lovely none grew really tall. So I quickly planted another batch, some of which are now over 7ft (2 meters) tall.
It’s has been so lovely to have so many in bloom all summer.
In a strange year, something special. 🌻

If you have followed me for any length of time you will know I love my garden. And this is the time of year that I will post images on my stories of the flowers. This year I am going to pepper my posts with some too. Starting with a flower, not from the garden but an Orchid from the house •

A week on from black out Tuesday. As imagery is important to me the images here have had the most impact on me and my continued learning around them.
The first image is by @simbarashecha for The New York Times. It is very powerful and full of feeling. I also like that the person is anonymous. As I have read in demonstrations in the past the photographer has gone on to win awards and the demonstrator has gone and died. This makes me anxious for the girl on the second picture by @daisugano a picture that mirrors the Pepsi ad one of the Jenners took part in, with menace.
The third image of Washington DC and the road leading to the White House taken from google earth, a powerful political statement.
The 4th image is an image from @ruba she went on in this post to say that according to Harvard Professor @ericachidi there is a direct correlation between the success of protest movements and the involvement of women. I also learned from @ericachidi that non violent demonstrations have been proven to be more powerful in creating change than violent.
The 5th image is a powerful history lesson. Stolen. Stolen land and Stolen people. Stolen. We are taught that stealing is wrong. This means all stealing is wrong, let that sink in.
Image 6 by @rontimehin shot in London the killing must stop. Choke holds are obviously barbaric and must be outlawed.
Finally image No.7 and quote by @ayanaeliza “I need you to understand our racial inequality crisis is intertwined with our climate crisis.” I agree with her 100%.
Going forward our purpose must be to put people and planet first.

I understand that I will never understand, but I stand with you. What next? You all like me posted your black squares yesterday. Today the learning starts. Who are you following? Who’s voices are you listening to? I am not your teacher as I speak from a position of white privilege, I can tell you about some of the voices I listen to. A good place to start is to buy @renieddolodge wonderful book ‘Why I am no longer talking to white people about race’.
Consider following @celinecelines @ajabarber @theconsciouskid @thedailyshow @seedingsovereignty @nowhitesaviors @chooselove @theslowfactory for starters. There will be/are uncomfortable messages, we must listen and learn. #solidarity

Although it sounds like #socialdistancing rules are changing ever so slightly. It’s going to be some time before I will be able to work properly as a photographer. Till then #facetimephotoshoot like this one with @emilia.macleod is an option.
With thanks to @stevemac65 for assisting.

Emilia shot from afar. Emilia and I have never met. I have seen #facetimephotography happening and wanted to see how it all went. It was lovely to have this interaction again. Thank you @emilia.macleod for trying this out with me.
What I learnt, it was fun to do, however the file sizes are tiny so great for insta only. If you would like content for your insta and would like to shoot this way DM to discuss. If you are a photographer and want to know how to do this also DM am happy to share how.

Looking forward I asked Inspirational Woman @dilys.williams for her thoughts, we spoke about technology,
she said “it doesn’t matter how much the efficiency of one pair of jeans being created with half the water content if you are selling 10 times as many jeans as you were a year ago, then it is totally facile. Its green washing at best, at worst it is just there to distract people and make people think that its fine, that enough is being done. I think there is a role for technology and tech touches all our lives it’s done all sorts of things that we couldn’t do, but I think you have to be really careful, to know what the purpose is behind the use of a particular technology and ultimately we have to live with less.
So moving forward “It’s just a question of when people stop holding on to this old world of being able to get cheap things quick and thinking, that is kind of cool to actually think that, to it so not being cool. Its far better more enjoyable, more relaxing to be able to do things with what we’ve already got. And maybe thinking back to the virus people actually realising that you can do things without getting all this stuff all the time. Dreadful as it, but if there are elements of it that make people stop and think that health and wellbeing and the earth actually matter. Nothing else does, that will be a positive.”
Here’s looking forward to more positive times ahead and a brighter future for us all.

The work that Inspirational Woman @dilys.williams does allows her work in a multi faceted way, through education, politics and big business. One of the projects her and @sustfash created was a check list for @theofficialselfridges The check list is for the buyers.
“it’s no good designing something really well and encouraging designers to do that and the buyers not recognising the difference. So that’s why we thought of simultaneously making what the media, the story in the press, what buyers are looking for and what designers are doing match up. Otherwise you would be doing great stuff, but if no one even recognises it then they won’t buy it.
DV: I guess it also allows them to question what is happening in the factories when they go visit.
DL: Buyers are starting to think differently about what it is that their role is. Is fashion just about selling stuff, or are there other ways in which to be able to look at the fashion and cultural sector, at ways to do things differently. More and more people like Selfridges are putting on projects putting on more exhibitions and events that are not just about selling
you stuff.”
Obviously our interview happened before the Covid 19 outbreak and lock down, which has forced all of this even more to the fore. What will this landscape look like next? With so many garment workers at great risk right now, the buyers have a huge ethical role on their hands. All of them will need a check list post Covid.

28/04/2020

Climate Emergency. There is a lot of talk during this time of Covid 19, of our wish for things NOT to return to how they were. At least, that is what the algorithm is showing me, because that is what interests me and what I, would like. I often wonder what others are seeing and thinking. To know that if we don’t make huge systematic changes within the next 9 and 1/2 years, now, the environmental disaster will make Covid 19 seem like a walk in the park.
What we are learning even more now is that our beautiful planet doesn’t need us. It can heal quickly without us.
We on the other hand only have the option to live here. Our mission now, is to make sure our governments implement what we know, to clean up and live in harmony with nature and the planet and stop treating it like a dumping ground. Humanity needs to do this for ourselves. Surely this should be our self serving goal.
This was not how I had planned this post but felt the need to say what I feel. This image of wonderful @dilys.williams seemed to sum up and illustrate exactly that. Also during our interview she said, which fits in nicely here 'When you ask people what they care about everybody does care about nature. Everyone does actually care about community. We get distracted into doing different things, buying different things. There is a fundamental sense of human values that are totally in sync with caring for each other and for where we live.' Lets continue caring for each other once Covid 19 has past.
How are you all feeling and coping?

26/04/2020

During our conversational interview Dilys spoke about the importance of good well made fashion. That when something is well made it lasts for longer and drew a parallel with ‘The Makers Manifesto’ “I don’t know if you have come across it? It was a load of Techies who created a manifesto, in response to electronics goods that were made that you can’t take apart and put back together again. The manifesto states that good design means that you should be able to completely deconstruct something and easily reconstruct it again. Unless you can do that it’s not good design. I think it’s the same with fashion. Clothes used to be made in a way that you could change them, alter them, do different things with them, so generations could wear them. A lot of it now you just can’t do that with. So if that stuff becomes identified as crap design then you start to change people’s mindsets and it’s culture changing. We all love a bit of novelty, if something is cheap you think if I don’t like it, it only costs whatever so let’s buy it. We need to retrain ourselves and to say, ‘actually I have spent this much over the last 6 months on not great clothes and OMG I could have had this beautiful piece instead.’ And that is why the media and photographers and journalists as well as designers as well as people all have to be part of this it all has to be a new era, a new awareness.”

23/04/2020

During my chat with Inspirational Woman @dilys.williams Director of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion we of course spoke about the importance of education in fashion to bring change.

Dv: “You have the job of empowering students to find their path and help push for the changes we need to see.”

DL: “Yes and then you see people like @bethany_williams_london and @phoebeenglish and you think WOW, this is fantastic, it amazing and its beyond anything I would have imagined people could do. It’s tricky times but it’s also fantastic times. Also, in different parts of the system. You have Bethany on one hand and someone who is at @stellamccartney now @claire.bergkamp who has done amazing things there it’s that thing of inside, outside. Bethany started her own thing completely, Claire is doing something inside a big luxury business but the two of them are creating change in different places simultaneously.
What Bethany and Phoebe are doing is redefining what a fashion designer is, working collaboratively working with others and recognising the value of other people and that way of working is a huge mindset change. When we were at college and even until quite recently in some courses and maybe still now. You literally don’t show anyone your sketches even, there is such a paranoia.
DV: But to make the changes they are saying look I have learnt how to do this, maybe if we bring this and this together …...
DL: Yes, and also education should be about giving you the confidence that your own work is distinctive. So nobody is going to copy you and do exactly the same, there are enough ideas out there.”
