The calm before the storm. I photographed at the amazing bouldering centre Vauxwall East during lockdown. Eerily empty and still at the time, it won't be for long! Roll on Monday.

“Why were all the people I saw around me only those from poor families? Didn’t the rich commit crimes?” James Osano was arrested in 2003 and after a 7 year trial period, he was sentenced to death. Over the past 17 years James has not only completed his secondary school education, studied law - with the University of London via its International learning programme - and undergone paralegal training, but also written a book. In his book, ‘Tears of a Prisoner’ he speaks about his life in prison, the judicial system in Kenya and his recommendations on prison reforms.

When he looks alback at his own court documents today, he feels that the state lawyer given to him during his trial did not put much effort into representing him in court. But all hope is not lost. After a court ruling that declared the mandatory death sentence unconstitutional in Kenya, James has since returned to court for his re-sentencing. He hopes that this will eventually enable him to regain his freedom.

Absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted again for 2020.

This is Mbola. In 2010 he was sentenced to life in prison. I photographed him in Naivasha Maximum Security Prison where he has been since 2016. A teacher before his incarceration, Mbola worked in the legal clinic within the prison, helping others with there appeals and legal issues. I am pleased to let you know that on the 10th March this year Mbola was released after a successful re-sentencing hearing.

Last year I spent some time in three Maximum Security Prisons in Kenya. It's the sort of job that you don't turn down, but I really had no idea what to expect. What sort of access would I have? Would there be loads of constraints on locations and times? What kit can I take? What will the inmates be like? Will they understand the shoot I want to do? I had so many questions leading up to the trip, but I turned up, open minded, as prepared as I could be, and excited for the experience.

I've got some really exciting new work to show you very soon. Actually, starting now. This is Tabitha, Mose and Jacky. They are guards at a maximum security prison in Kenya. But that's all you are getting for now. No one is reading this far anyway.
