BOOK TALK
Positive Illusion
Benjamin Freedman in conversation with Chiara Nonino
Saturday 5 April, 5PM
📍SPBH Space, Milan

Positive Illusion presents a captivating sequence of CGI-generated images in which Canadian artist Benjamin Freedman reconstructs childhood memories of a 1999 family road trip to Maine. Blurring the line between reality and simulation, these surreal images evoke the sensory and emotional layers of memory, exploring how technology reshapes nostalgia and challenges the photographic medium.

✨Say Yes by at

Joseph Desler Costa is an American-born artist, photographer, and musician based between Brooklyn, NY and Milan, Italy. Through various disciplines, Costa’s work examines consumerist dreams, the powers of persuasion, and the origins of desire. From 18 – 23 November 2023,  the artist presented works from his new book Say Yes, published by SPBH Editions, at Commerce.

Inspired by the persuasions of mass media and consumer culture, Say Yes folds commercialism inward while inviting viewers to consider how the aesthetics of visual advertising underlie contemporary life. Costa’s images form a part-critique and part-embrace of such promises, and the artist himself often mimics the slick visual rhetorics of commercial photographs in order not to sell products, but to engage with notions of selfhood, nostalgic fantasy, and the hunger pangs of desire that motivate the modern world.

In a time of both hyper-connectivity and hyper-isolation, what Say Yes beckons is a reflection of the world we’re forced to inhabit: a smoothed over, technologically-dominated psychic space in which the lines between who we are and what we buy have all but disappeared. Costa’s work reminds us that in the eyes of a world conducted by commerce and profit, we exist more as economic beings than individuals, and that such a world will use all the tools at its disposal to form the fantasies we buy into. Some of us will do so gladly, and perhaps we can take solace in the holes in ourselves that temporary fantasies can fill, even for just a little while.

📣Call for Submissions:
Nordic PhotoBook Award

Application deadline:  1 January 2024

Fotogalleriet relaunches the Nordic PhotoBook Award in a renewed format to support novel, radical, and cutting-edge approaches to the photobook format that rethinks the need for publishing today. The prize aims to support the production of a fully-fledged book that takes a radical approach in this critical historical time. The awarded project will find publication through SPBH Editions.

Submissions are accepted from professionals based on the Norwegian territory, Norwegian citizens, or practitioners connected to Norwegian and Sámi artists and photographers. Fotogalleriet do not expect an entirely conceived dummy for a photobook but a project proposal for a book of photography that is advanced enough to discuss with a publisher the book publication, and some of its material. The award looks at the concept of the new as something that may not have seen appreciation or a proper understanding in its time and awaits publication due to its relevance today.

The value of the prize consists of kr 200,000 (approx. 17,000 EUR or 18,000 USD), which will be channelled toward the production, distribution, and promotion of the work. The award is open to professionals using photography, proposing the book publishing as a form and a project that has not been published before. In exceptional cases, and given proper argumentation, the jury will consider proposals for books that have previously been printed but need to find a new publication. The jury will pay special attention to content-driven, experimental, and innovative editorial recommendations.

The deadline for applications is 1 January 2024. A jury constituted of international and local experts will select the shortlisted projects and designate a winner.

We are thrilled to announce that The Drawer by Vince Aletti has been shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards in the PhotoBook of the Year category!

American critic and curator Vince Aletti has been collecting photographs printed on the pages of magazines and books since the 1970s in an antique flat file in his East Village apartment. The 75 multi-layered compositions created by Aletti and presented in The Drawer are a celebration of the beauty of photography and the printed page, as well as testimony of the author's unique ability to voice the complexity and variety of desire, personal and collective histories, and the power of art to reflect and shape who we are.

Thank you to the Aperture team and the jury members Deirdre Donohue, Alex Lin, Lesley A. Martin; Renée Mussai, and Anna Planas.

We still have copies of The Drawer available for order in the UK and North America, as well as Special Edition copies available in Europe. Visit our shop via the link in bio🔗
