When you meet another woman who you would like to share a village with… but you live a world apart. 💞

Here’s to all the support systems that exist virtually; though holding hands and hugging and sitting quietly together is the gold standard, I am grateful for the technologies that allow our hearts to remain connected across the oceans. 🌊

“Love is many things, most of its forms are fleeting, linked to everything that happens, everything that comes and goes, everything that fills us at first, then empties us out, but unconditional love is constant, it glows faintly throughout one's whole life. [...] It may happen that you don't want anything to do with it. It may happen that you turn away from it. And one day you will understand that it doesn't matter, that it doesn't change anything, that unconditional love is the only love that doesn't bind you but sets you free.” - Karl Ove Knausgard

The Language of the Brag
By Sharon Olds

I have wanted excellence in the knife-throw,
I have wanted to use my exceptionally strong and accurate arms
and my straight posture and quick electric muscles
to achieve something at the centre of a crowd,
the blade piercing the bark deep,
the haft slowly and heavily vibrating like the c**k.

I have wanted some epic use for my excellent body,
some heroism, some American achievement
beyond the ordinary for my extraordinary self,
magnetic and tensile, I have stood by the sandlot
and watched the boys play.

I have wanted courage, I have thought about fire
and the crossing of waterfalls, I have dragged around

my belly big with cowardice and safely,
my stool black with iron pills,
my huge breasts oozing mucus,
my legs swelling, my hands swelling,
my face swelling and darkening, my hair
falling out, my inner s*x
stabbed again and again with terrible pain like a knife.
I have lain down.

I have lain down and sweated and shaken
and passed blood and f***s and water and
slowly alone in the centre of a circle I have
passed the new person out
and they have lifted the new person free of the act
and wiped the new person free of that
language of blood like praise all over the body.

I have done what you wanted to do, Walt Whitman,
Allen Ginsberg, I have done this thing,

I and the other women this exceptional
act with the exceptional heroic body,
this giving birth, this glistening verb,
and I am putting my proud American boast
right here with the others.

The human body is mind-blowing. This sweet babe has gleaned every ounce of his physical form so far from his mama’s body; fetal cells, placental nourishment, and now colostrum and breast milk.

Can you guess how long fetal cells remain in the baby’s body?

P.S. I love this photo. Don’t miss the peeping specks of morning light on them; their first wake together. ☀️

I just can’t get over this birth story: I got a call around 1:00 in the morning to say that this birthing mama’s contractions had begun. I started getting my camera and bag loaded up, assuming I had quite a bit of time. I asked them to call me when they were on their way to the birth center; I’d meet them there.

Fast-forward 32 minutes. I texted to check in. Dad called me. I heard newborn cries in the background. “He’s here. He was born. Yes, we’re okay. Everyone is fine.”

He went on to tell me that he had been the only one there when their son was born; after four contractions and on their living room floor. He caught their sweet, healthy son.

Within a few minutes, her mom arrived, followed by the paramedics and their midwife.

I came to their house later that morning and found a home brimming with love, exhaustion, elation, and an expected dose of shock after such a swift arrival!

Golden hour cuddles as these three caught their breath and fell in love. 💜❤️🧡
